All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Brian Core greenhouseguy@juno.com January 27, 2007, 9:45 pm Declaration For Revolutionary War Pension Pennsylvania Greene County SS Before me one of the associate Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County aforesaid, personally appeared James Hook who upon his solemn oath & affirmation deposeth & sayeth; That in the fall seventy six, he was appointed a Captain in the Regiment raised by Colonel Crawford the 13th Regiment; that he served on the Western frontier untill the summer of seventy seven, when he was ordered to head quarters (at Trenton) where the command of the Regiment devolved on Colonel Russel, that he was in the Battle of Brandywine & Germantown, that he served in the Revolutionary War from November 1776 till June 1778, at which time he left the service by the consent of his commanding officer (Colonel Brodhead) this deponent further sayeth; that he is old & poor, & kneads the aid of his Country for his support, James Hook Sworn & subscribed before me the 5th day of October A. D. 1818 David Gray His pension file also contains a later declaration: Pennsylvania Greene County SS On this (blank) day of June 1821 personally appeared in the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Greene in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (being a court of Record) in open court James Hook of said County and being duly sworn according to law on his solemn oath did depose and say, that he served in the Revolutionary war as follows, to wit, as a Captain the thirteenth Virginia regiment that he was a Captain on the frontiers in 1775 – but was commissioned as a Captain in the said thirteenth Virginia Regiment in the summer or fall of the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy six and was stationed for some time at Wheeling and guarded some powder to Pittsburgh in the spring of 1777 and under orders to that purpose – marched to the state of New Jersey to head Quarters – He served in the said Regiment under the Command of Colonel Crawford till his resignation and afterwards under Colonel Russel who succeeded Crawford was marched back to Pittsburgh in 1778 when he was under the Command of Colonel Brodhead till he quit the service in the fall or latter part of the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight. I do also swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time, by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with interest thereby to diminish it so as to bring myself with the provision of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war passed the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me my property or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed I do also swear that t the best of my knowledge I am about seventy two years of age was formerly a farmer and afterwards a merchant by occupation that my family consists of a wife about fifty six years old that I am very unhealthy and wholly incapable of labour or any kind of business – that I was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown - I do also swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time resided out of the same and that all the property, dues, and claims to which I am entitled are contained in the following schedule which also contains a statement of some among many debts which I owe. My services are stated in my original application under which a certificate placing me on the pension list Penna. Agency dated 26th October 1819 No. 15,657 was granted. Tubs made of cut barrels .50 Sugar box & 7 plates 1.00 2 basons 1.00 a dish 3 saucers & 5 tea cups 0.75 a puter tea pot 20 years old & old adze 0.25 a hammer, quart, 4 cups, 2 cannisters 1.00 a small box, brass & tin plate reel & wheel 1.50 an old (illegible) and 2 beds & bedding 25.00 James Hooks owes a Judgment to Thomas Slaters Executors of several hundred Dollars – to Eli Williams four hundred pounds and a number of large debts – James Hook Sworn and Subscribed in Open Court this 19th June 1821 – Wm.
