Ticket, Freight and Baggage Agent: Associated with the Bartons is a period of close on to one hundred and forty years in Shirleysburg and its surroundings. Thomas Nelson Barton, now deceased, was the father of Bower Charles Barton, who was born at Shirleysburg, Pa. The homestead is still in a good state of preservation. At the Shirleysburg Seminary, Mr. Barton received his early schooling under Professor Kidder, a learned man, who could command eight different languages, and at this same institution Admiral Sims, now retired, received his education. This seminary has sent out into the world men of prominence, and from this small acorn a large oak developed, and to-day it stands as a monument to their worth. Thomas Nelson Barton married Mary S. Swinford. She also is deceased. Bower Barton at present is agent for the East Broad Top R.R., and has occupied this position for the past thirty-five years. He has been a general utility man, having worked all over the line in all its various activities. He has filled the office of school director for four years, and also secretary of the school board of Shirley township. Strong in the Baptist faith, which seems to come natural to the Bartons. Bower Barton stands high in the estimation of his fellow men, and the name of Barton will continue to cling to the coming generation like the ivy clings to the wall. A community is known by it me who help to uphold its traditions.
