HERBERT BEAM, A.B., B.D., A.M. Orbisonia, Pa. Minister: Methodist Episcopal Church. Born on farm, Cumberland Co., Pa., May 27, 1896; preliminary education in the rural schools of Cumberland county. His father, Edward L. Beam, Asst. Foreman, P.R.R., his mother being Bertie (Plank) Beam. Both reside in Cumberland county. He is a graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., receiving the degrees of A.B. and A.M. Later at Garrett Seminary, with Northwestern University, received the degree of B.D. Was principal of Smithland School, Woodbury Co., Iowa. He has been minister at Orbisonia since 1927. Other charges are Oto, Iowa; Claysburg, Pa.; Bakerton, Cambria Co., Pa. He is First Vice-President of the Altoona District Epworth League. College Fraternity (Beta Theta Pi). Belongs to the I.O.O.F., Claysburg, Pa. A Republican. One sister, Mrs. Charles Cornman, Mt. Holly Springs, Pa. Rev. Beam served in the World War. Enlisted at Harrisburg, Pa., and was sent to Columbus Barracks, put in 7th Engineers, 5th Division, and sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; in training; went overseas, and landed at Le Havre, France; thence to Montigny; at Le Roi put up in hospital; from there to the Vosges Mountain sector in engagement at Frappelle; in action, then to Saint Mihiel sector; in action to Argonne; in action at time armistice was signed, Nov. 11, 1918. Served one year and four months; went over on Cunard liner Orduna, came back on America; discharged at Camp Dix, N.J. Rev. Beam was married to Katharine Patterson, daughter of C. A. and Charlotte Patterson, of Williamsburg, Blair Co. They have one son, Herbert, five years, and one daughter, Charlotte, two years.
