BURKETT Warriorsmark, Pa. Retired: Born March 31, 1849, at Warriorsmark, Huntingdon Co., Pa., on a farm. Peter Burkett was his father, who had a tan yard, and tanned hides, and was born Jan. 8, 1814. He died Nov. 27, 1896, aged 82 years. His wife was Nancy Homer, born August 29, 1816, and died August 10, 1881, aged 65 years. John R. Burkett was a Civil War veteran, and is the only one remaining within a radius of seven miles. Enlisted at Hollidaysburg, Pa., at the age of fifteen years, and was put in Co. A, 205th Penna Vol. Inf., under Capt. Geo. A. Guinner, Col. Matthews commanding. Was in the Third Division, Ninth Army Corps. From Hollidaysburg went to Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa.; to Washington, D.C.; proceeded to take Petersburg; chased Lee to the place of surrender; served one years, and was mustered out at Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Burkett was in the undertaking business at Warriorsmark, Huntingdon Co., Pa., for a period of ten years; was also a carpenter and contractor; is now retired. Belongs to G.A.R., Major Jones Post, No. 172, Tyrone, Pa. Served as Treasurer of the township where he resided for eight years. Is a Methodist Episcopal, and a steward on the Official Board. Has six brothers, William, James, David, Mahlon, George and Howard. All are deceased. Two sisters, Adie; Eliza is married to Hayes H. Waite, Attorney-at-Law, Huntingdon, Pa. John B. Burkett was first married to Jennie Lowe, deceased; two daughters of this union, Carrie M. Burkett, Altoona, Pa., and Annie Mong, Bellwood, Pa. He remarried to Ella McFarland. She died in 1924. One son and one daughter, Dr. Clair Burkett, married to Margaret Funk, Altoona, Pa., and Edna, married to Harold Burton, Philadelphia, Pa.
