Street Commissioner: Herbert Eugene Cromer occupies a prominent place in the roster of Mount Union officials. The care and the upkeep of the borough's streets are in his keeping. Mr. Cromer was born at Fort Littleton on March 21st 1892, where he also began his early school training. He was a tiller of the soil and other pursuits that pertained to farm life. At the age of 20 years he left he farm. His father is Daniel W. Cromer, of Burnt Cabins, who married Flora Todhunter, both living at Burnt Cabins. During the World War Mr. Cromer enlisted in the Aviation Branch of the government service, March 4th, 1918, at Kelly Field, Texas, and was discharged June 28th, 1919. From 1922 to 1927 he conducted and built a modern equipped garage, catering to a large patronage; also erected five-in-one apartments with all modern conveniences. He has three brothers: Thomas and Robert, at home; Raymond, a principal in the public schools of Johnstown, Pa; also three sisters: Lena, married to Ernest Ward, of Greenboro, N.C.; Jane, married to Russell Gracey, of Mount Union, borough official; Nellie, at home. Four children are deceased. Mr. Cromer married Emma Kelly, of Decorum, Pa. He belongs to the I.O.O.F., No. 244, Tyrone, Pa.; Masonic fraternity, Washington, No. 142, also. In politics a Republican. Member of Juniata Colony Club and First Engineer Mt. Union Fire Co. Belongs to M. E. Church and a teacher in the Sunday School. Appointed Street Commissioner in 1927, and has capably filled this office with credit to himself as well as to the public.
