Furniture: The history of the Evans' dates back to Evan Evans, who emigrated from Wales to America and settled ten miles south of Reading, Pa., at a place named the Forest, near Hopewell Iron Works, and lived there the remainder of his days. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He died a year or two prior to the War of 1812. His family consisted of the following: John Evans, who emigrated to Wayne Co., Ohio; Cadwalader Evans, who emigrated to Bedford Co., Pa., March, 1793. Also Evan Evans accompanied Cadwalader to the same place, which is now Clearville, Pa. And so on down the line, a record which is in possession of Joseph Edward Evans, of Huntingdon, Pa., dealer in furniture and furnishings. Joseph Edward Evans is a son of Joseph C. and Anna M. (Carpenter) Evans. He was a farmer who owned a farm of one hundred acres in Blair Co., Pa.; was also a blacksmith. He died in 1913. His wife died in 1927. The subject of this sketch, Joseph Edward Evans, was born at Bedford, Pa., in 1869. He began his early schooling at Bedford, Pa. Engaged in various businesses; conducted a hotel at Bedford, Pa.; also a steam laundry at Bedford, Pa., in 1902. Was a private police at summer resort, Bedford Springs Hotel, 1890. During the World War was engaged in the furniture business. Belongs to the F.& A.M., Mount Moriah, No. 300; Standing Stone Chapter No. 201; Harrisburg Consistory; a Shriner, Jaffa Temple, Altoona, Pa.; P.O.S. of A., No. 321, Huntingdon, Pa.; Chamber of Commerce; member of Abbey Reformed Church, Huntingdon, Pa.; wife also; Deacon and Trustee; attends Sunday School. Sisters are: Mrs. Dr. J. W. Carter, Altoona, Pa.; Mrs. C. E. Carpenter, Markleton, Pa.; one deceased sister, Mrs. C.A. Magnus. Brothers are L.A. Evans, Hollidaysburg, Pa.; O. J. Evans, Altoona, Pa.; C. V. Evans, Bellwood, Pa.; Frederick Evans, Altoona, Pa. One brother deceased, Geo. B. Evans. Joseph Edward Evans was first married to Anna M. Waters, a daughter of Michael and Charlotte Waters. Children as follows: Ellis B., married to Helen Weber, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Jessie E., New York, a teacher; Margaret, married to LeRoy Copelin, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mary Irene, married to Fred D. Wells, Huntingdon, Pa. Joseph Edward Evans remarried to Cora M. Reitz, in 1927, a daughter of Daniel and Mary Reitz. Mr. Evans is a prominent business man and at present conducts a furniture and housefurnishing business, long established and enjoys a thriving business.
