EYLES Orbisonia, Pa. Groceries and Provisions: Born at Pittsburgh, Pa., July 19, 1894. A son of Fred and Margaret (Mendel) Eyles, of German descent, both living at Zelinople, Butler County, Pa. He began his schooling at Pittsburgh, Pa. Graduated at Zelinople High School in 1912. Employed with the King Manufacturing Company at Detroit, Michigan; also clerk at Sanitary Manufacturing Company, Zelinople, Pa. Enlisted in Co. A, 18th Regiment National Guards, in 1916. Under Col. Shannon, Pittsburgh, Pa., with bridge service three months; then to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia. Consolidated with Sixth Philadelphia National Guards, together with 18th Pittsburgh Regiment; transferred to Camp Upton, Long Island, New York; embarked for France on the (Olympic) with 8,000 troops; 2,000 nurses; vessel was rammed on the Irish Coast, and necessitated landing at Southampton, England; then to Calais, France; from there to Lille, France, on the outskirts, at this time in possession of German troops; from that time served in Chateau Thierry sector; then to Argonne Forest; to Metz sector; at time of Armistice on front line; gassed; came back and was discharged. Entered the grocery business at Everett, Pa., for four years and for three years was manager for A.& P. store in Orbisonia, Pa. On Nov. 1, 1929, opened up present business. The Eyles are Lutherans, belonging to the Everett Church. He is a Mason, Cromwell Lodge, No. 572, Orbisonia; I.O.O.F., Zelinople, Pa. Belongs to Orbisonia Deer Club and Chamber of Commerce. Has one brother, Elmer W., at Everett, Pa. Harvey R. Eyles was married to Rhoda Danver, of Zelinople; have three sons: Harvey W., eight years; Edwin E., five years, and Richard N., three years.
