V. HACKMAN Mount Union, Pa. Captain of Industry: Born at Clearfield Co., Pa., August 29, 1870. A son of Reuben Hackman, deceased, at the age of seventy-two years, and of Philipina (Korb) Hackman, deceased, at the age of seventy-three years. In the grade schools of Clearfield he laid the foundation of an education that fitted him to become a leader of men. He early in life grasped the ideas of a practical business career. He was in the grocery and furniture business at Clearfield: was burgess at the age of twenty-three years; assistant postmaster; a bookkeeper for Clearfield Lumber Co.; was with the New York Central R.R.; also the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad. Was superintendent of a brick plant at Chicago, Ill., and about this period of his life, in 1901, he became a citizen of Mount Union, Pa., being assigned as the superintendent of the Mount Union Plant of the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co., the company's largest plant, being a chain of many plants which they operate. Later on he and his associates built a modern plant at Mount Union for the manufacture of silica brick, where they later on installed machinery for the manufacture of brick. He is to-day its Vice- President and plant manager. He is President and one of the incorporators of the Huntingdon Woodcrafters Corporation of Huntingdon, Pa.; established in 1929, a model plant with machinery which is adapted to this business. He owns six farms, operates saw mills. A director of the Wilson Petroleum Co., Tusla, Oklahoma, and director of the Central National Bank, Mount Union, Pa. He is on the board of managers of the Pennsylvania Industrial Reformatory, which is partly self-supporting from the produce and farm products produced. He was appointed on the Board of Directors of the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Sept. 1, 1929. A member of the County Law Enforcement League, and is head of the Adult Bible Classes of Huntingdon Co., Pa. During the World War he was active to a large extent in Red Cross activity and also the Liberty Loan and their drives. He believes in the doctrines of the Republican party, and now as to his activities as regard Mount Union. He has served on the school board, belongs to the Chamber of Commerce, a charter member and Vice-President of Rotary, organized in 1929; the Mount Union Club; the Law and Order Association; was instrumental in organizing the Boy Scout movement in Mount Union. He is interested in the Juniata Valley Colony Club, Juniata Valley Realty Co., and Silver Ford Heights Corporation. As pertaining to church matters, he is a Lutheran, an elder, and Superintendent of the Sunday School. His wife also is a member of the Lutheran church. He plays golf for recreation. He was married to Annie Kettleberger, a daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Kettleberger. They have three daughters: Frederica, a graduate of the Mount Union High School, West Chester State Normal and Sweet Briar College. She was married to Dr. Paul Maxwell, Mount Union, Pa. They have one son, Samuel, and one daughter, Jane. Mary Julia Hackman was married to Thomas Cohill, Brooklyn, N.Y. She is a graduate of the Mount Union High School; also a graduate of West Chester State Normal and of Sweet Briar College. Crowned her educational career at Columbia University. They have two sons, Thomas and James. Another daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hackman is Ann K., a graduate of Mount Union High School, and also Goucher College. She has enrolled at Columbia University for a master's degree. C. V. Hackman represents a type of men who can overcome obstacles, and have broad ideas. He is a good example of what may be accomplished by any young man who possesses pluck and perseverance. He resides in a beautiful home on Pennsylvania Avenue, Mount Union, Pa.
