World War Veteran: Ralph Hartman was born on a farm in Black Log Valley, Sept. 1, 1894. A son of Emanuel and Fannie (Robison) Hartman; they now reside at Allenport, Huntingdon Co., Pa., a suburb of Mt. Union, Pa. They previously resided in Black Log Valley. Ralph Hartman left the farm when he was six years of age; received his schooling at Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, Pa. He has been a woodsman; was with the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co.; three years with United States Refractories Co., and four years with the General Refractories Co. He served in that mighty conflict, the World War. He enlisted at Huntingdon, Pa.; was sent to Fort Thomas, Ky.; there three days; went to Camp Forrest, Ga.; assigned to Camp Mills, N.Y.; sailed on English transport; was eleven days on water; arrived at Liverpool, England; crossed English Channel to La Havre, France; in rest camp for three days; left for Loraine sector; came back to Argonne Forest; went into action, for four days; walked for fourteen days; Armistice signed; went to Rocy C. Orisse, France; there for three months; went to Germany, Moselle River, for guard duty; there for twenty days. Left for Brest, France, on railroad; embarked on transport for United States; arrived at New York; Camp Merritt; to Camp Dix, N.J., for discharge; total service fourteen months. Ralph Hartman is a Republican. He has three brothers: Earl, Carl and Marshall, who are at home. He has three sisters: Edna, married to Harry Brown, Mansfield, Ohio; Hazel, Lewistown, Pa.; Frances, at home. Ralph Hartman was married to Margaret Price, a daughter of Elijah Price. They have one son, William, five years of age; one son deceased, Oliver James, who died in infancy. Three daughters: Edna, eight years; Jane, seven years; Virginia, three years, and Sarah Louise, three months old.
