Retired: The great-grandfather of Samuel Hatfield, the subject of this sketch, was born in 1786, in Montgomery Co., Pa. At an early age he went to Philadelphia, and was there engaged in mercantile pursuits for a number of years. In 1838, with his sons, Samuel and Benjamin R., he went to Huntingdon Co., Pa., where he established his sons in the manufacture of the famous "Juniata Charcoal Iron," under the firm name of S. and B.R. Hatfield. Samuel Hatfield, Sr., died in 1872, aged eighty-six years. His son Samuel was the father to whom this sketch is written. Was born in 1818. He engaged in the iron business in 1838, and retired from it in 1875. In 1892 he removed from his farm and iron works property to Alexandria, where he lived to the time of his decease, Nov. 16, 1894, at the age of seventy-six years. History records him as being a very quiet, unassuming man, whose real value to the community is likely to be underestimated. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church for a number of years. He married Elizabeth Neff. She died in 1898, at the age of seventy-six years. The son, Samuel Hatfield, began his preliminary education at the Aqueduct school house at Alexandria, Pa. He later attended the Pine Grove Academy, also the Pottstown Academy, and finally the Port Royal Academy. He accepted a clerkship at the Mapleton Glass Sand Co., after which he obtained control. For twenty-four years he followed up this line of business. These works are now known as the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation. Mr. Hatfield is now retired, and lives in a beautiful home in Alexandria. He is a Republican in politics. He served on the council and school board at Mapleton Depot. He formerly was Sunday School Superintendent of the Presbyterian church, of which he is a member, and also an elder. He has one brother, Benjamin, Huntingdon, Pa. One sister, Mary Spyker, of Alexandria, Pa.; one brother, Samuel, is deceased; also one sister, Lizzie, deceased. Samuel Hatfield was married to Anna Phillips, a daughter of William and Susan Phillips; she is deceased. He remarried to Martha Peck. Mr. Hatfield takes an interest in all that pertains to the welfare of Alexandria, his birthplace.
