Service Station: George Franklin Hawkins has had somewhat of a checkered career. Formerly of the Broad Top section, that section of Riddlesburg and the surrounding country. In fact, he was born at Riddlesburg, Pa., May 13, 1895. A son of John Hawkins, who was married to Maria Bowser, of Riddlesburg, Pa. Both are deceased. In the Riddlesburg public schools he began his A.B.C.'s and continued on achieving an excellent education. Was a coal miner at Defiance, Pa., for five years, after which he became associated with the Prudential Insurance Company, covering a large territory, and being very successful. Then we find him purchasing the equipment for the manufacture of soft drinks and installing the latest improved methods for the conducting of this business. For five years he continued at this business, selling out to I.W. Workman, who has since continued this business. Politics then entered into his career and he was a candidate for Justice of the Peace. He was elected and served six years. Established a service station at Allenport, a suburb of Mount Union; conducted it for some time; disposed of same; re-entered the same business and same location, remodeled and reconstructed the same. Sells accessories, gas, oils, tires, confectionery, etc.; was on road as salesman. Is a Methodist, and a Republican. Belongs to the I.O.O.F., No. 677, Mount Union, Pa.; also to Jr. O.U.A.M., of Mount Union, Pa. Has two brothers, John B., Lewistown, Pa.; James H., Lewistown, Pa. Five sisters, Mary Katharine, of Loraine, Ohio; Rose, married to Irvin Bridenstine, Loraine, Ohio; Lizzie, married to Elmer Minster, Altoona, Pa.; Jennie, married to John Platt, Follansbee, W.V. Mr. Hawkins was married to Charity Switzer, of Riddlesburg, Pa. One daughter, Mary Margaret, at home. One son, William Fred, married, at Huntingdon, Pa. Mr. Hawkins has served many times on the election board and as Councilman, has many friends and is well respected.
