HESS Shy Beaver, Huntingdon Co., Pa. Postmaster and Merchant: He was born at Entriken, Huntingdon County, Pa., on March 3, 1868. A son of John Hess, who was a railroad foreman for thirty years, with the H.& B.T.R.R., who died at the age of eighty-one years, and of Elizabeth Ruppel, who died, aged eighty-five years. Charles R. Hess began his early schooling at Entriken, Huntingdon County, Pa., attended Juniata College for three terms, taught school, two terms in Porter Township, ten terms in Hopewell Township, and three terms at Fairfield, Ohio. At present he is postmaster and merchant at Shy Beaver, Huntingdon County, Pa. Was appointed under the Wilson Administration in 1913. Also carries a line of merchandise, drugs, notions, etc.; has been a merchant for thirty-three years. Has been auditor for Hopewell Township. A member of St. Paul's Reformed Church, Shy Beaver; wife and family also. He is a trustee and elder, and Superintendent of the Primary Department in the Sunday School. Belongs to I.O.O.F., No. 286, Alexandria, Pa., the Encampment at Fairfield, Ohio. A Democrat. He has five brothers: John, married to Annie Entriken, Altoona, Pa. His wife is deceased. Samuel, married to Martha Querry, wife deceased. He lives at Entriken, Huntingdon County, Pa. James, Sandusky, Ohio, Harry, at Entriken, Pa. William, married to Catharine Lynn, Entriken, Pa. Two brothers are deceased. George died in 1882, aged twenty-two years. Frank died in 1924, aged sixty years. Charles R. Hess was married to Caroline Dorman, a daughter of Henry and Margaret Dorman. Their children are as follows: Two sons, Elvin E., married to Sarah Brumbaugh; she was a graduate of the Saxton High School; was a teacher at Huntingdon, Pa., and attended Juniata College. Charles Palmer, at home. One daughter, Edna G., at home.
