Miller: Practically born in the milling business, is the record of James Clarence Hess, who was born in Fulton county, Pa., November 14, 1885, and at Thompson Township began his early schooling. His father was B.F. Hess, known far and wide. He died in 1896. His mother was Catharine (McEldowney) Hess, who died in 1927. Irish descent. Was a miller for three years in Thompson Township, and four years in Path Valley. In 1912 Mr. Hess bought from J.C. Taylor the mill he now owns, known as the Shade Gap Mill, fully equipped for the successful prosecution of this business, being propelled by water power. All the facilities are here, and a large business has been built up through the manufacture of staple products. Mr. Hess' products are much in demand. He has four sisters: Nellie I., at McConnellsburg, Pa.; Mamie S., married to John Perden, of Shade Gap, Pa.; Orpha L., married to Thomas Walters, of Shade Gap, Pa.; Bertha, married to Ira Douglas, of Hancock, Maryland. One brother, James Clarence Hess, deceased, was married to Hettie V. Gamble, who died December 21, 1924. Two sons, Clarence, twelve years, at home; also Donald, at home, both attending school. Three daughters: Ethel I., Mary E., and Margaret, aged six years. During the World War Mr. Hess helped along the Liberty Loan drives and also the work of the Red Cross. In politics a Republican. Has been a member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America, Camp 577, for twenty years. A member of the Presbyterian Church and a good citizen.
