Disabled War Veteran: He was born April 3, 1900, at Union Furnace, Huntingdon County, Pa., and is a son of David and Grace (Claycomb) Hoffmaster. She is deceased. William Hoffmaster began his school career at Barree, where he attended for three terms and for three years at Windber, Somerset County, Pa., and at the grade schools of Johnstown, Pa. He has followed farming. He was a coal miner when he volunteered his services for the World War, enlisting at Johnstown, Pa. February, 1917, and was sent to Fort Slocum, N.Y. He was there about two weeks; thence to Sanvanedo, Texas; assigned to Company E, 26th Infantry, First Division. Left in June, 1917, for Hoboken, N.J.; embarked on transport (Lenape); was on water fourteen days; landed at St. Nazaire, France; next to Loraine sector and was there for nine months; saw action at this point; left for Meuse-Argonne; again in action; next to Cantigny, on the offensive; left for Chateau Thierry sector, and was here at this point hit with a machine gun bullet in body; was sent to Field Hospital; later to Red Cross Hospital No.1; there for one month; thence to Base No. 28; to Base No. 8; left for embarkation point at St. Nazaire, France, on (Pastoria); arrived at Newport News Va.; he was then sent to government hospital for three weeks; went to Cape May, N.J.; to Fox Hills, N.J.; Staten Island, at government hospital; had limb amputated at Rochester, Pa., and also at Walter Reed Hospital. He has since been disabled, with a service of three and one-half years. He is a member and trustee of the Methodist Church at Barree; the American Legion, Post No. 580, Alexandria, Pa.; Veteran of Foreign Wars, Rochester, Pa. A Republican in politics. He has one sister, Mrs. W. A. Wessel, of Rochester, Pa. William Hoffmaster was married to Leona McCarty, of Barree, a daughter of G. B. and Naomi McCarty, of Barree, Pa. Two daughters, Josephine, five years, and Lillian Gail, two years.
