HOWER, Ph.D. Mount Union, Pa. Attorney-at-Law: Born in Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pa., January 21, 1875. Ancestry dates back 201 years; first located in Lehigh County, Pa. A great-grandfather was an officer under Washington in the Revolution. They tilled the soil and helped to open up civilization, so that posterity might benefit by their toil. Parentage is William H. Hower, deceased. Mother was Savilla (Eshback) Hower, deceased at the age of eighty- five years. Charles E. Hower laid the foundation for his educational career at the Warrior Run School, Lewis Township, Northumberland County, Pa.; Franklin and Marshall College in 1897,. Graduated and received the degree of Ph.D. from Illinois Wesleyan College in 1908. Graduated Dickinson Law School, class of 1910. He taught school one year at Pioneer School, in Delaware Township Northumberland County, Pa.; was for two years principal of Boalsburg Schools, Centre County, Pa.; one year Assistant Principal, Lewistown High School, Lewistown, Pa.; seven years principal, Mahanoy City, Pa., High School; Principal, Mount Union School. On June 1, 1913, began the practice of law at Mt. Union, Pa., specializing in civil and municipal law. He has been road viewer for ten years. Borough Solicitor for Mount Union, Pa., since 1913; School Director since 1913; served on election board at various times. President and Treasurer of Rockwood Coal Company for eleven years. Adviser Mount Union Building and Loan Association. A member of the Presbyterian Church. A Republican as regards politics. Belongs to the Masonic Fraternity, No. 688, Mount Union, Pa.; Mount Union Country Club; Chairman, Civil Legion, a war time organization. He has one brother, E.A. Hower, South Mont, Cambria County, Pa. Two sisters, Getha E., Milton, Pa., and Mable M., Swissvale, Pa. He was married to Jessie M. Savage, of Turbotville, Pa. To this union there were three sons: Robert, graduate Mount Union High, a senior at Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa.; Joseph, graduate of Mount Union High; Edgar, Mount Union High School, with Bell Telephone Co. Three daughters, Marion, graduate Mount Union High, attended Juniata College; graduated Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. She was married to Earl Cronigan, Carlisle, Pa. Helen, graduate Mount Union High, attended Juniata College; graduate Bucknell University; married to J. Ernest Hartz, San Francisco, California. Alice, also a graduate of Mount Union High, a Junior, Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa.
