Postmaster and Merchant: Was born April 14, 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated. Attended the regular sessions of school in the winter months, and subscription school during the summer months, at McConnellstown, the place where he was born. J. S. Johnston, who died in 1911, was his father. Rachel (Lloyd) Johnston was his mother, who died in 1898; of Scotch-English descent, American born. His grandfather was James Johnston, and on his mother's side was Abner Lloyd. At the age of seventeen years, John Calvin Johnston learned the gunsmith trade, and still continues to follow this occupation, at spare time. Has taught school in Juniata Township; two terms, and one term in Walker Township; clerked for J. W. Lloyd. Entered in business in 1892, and has been continuously engaged in business since. Was appointed postmaster February 1, 1929. Favors the Reformed church. Was on school board of Walker Township for four years, and many times was on the election board; Collector of Taxes since 1902. One brother, Bunyon D., married Ella Heffner, McConnellstown, Pa. One sister deceased, Martha Jane, aged three years; two brothers deceased, William C., aged two years, and James Benton, two years of age. Mr. Johnston married Laura Hicks, of McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Pa. One son, William Byron, married to Elizabeth Barrick, of Huntingdon, Pa., a daughter of Warren Barrick. Mr. Johnston is a Democrat, and is well and favorably known.
