Mount Union, Pa. Justice of the Peace: Elmer Harrison Laird was born at Graysville, Huntingdon County, Pa., June 29, 1888, in a section of the county that is noted for its farming interests, being near the county line and near the community of Warriorsmark. He is a son of George W. and Sally (Shilling) Laird, who for years were residents of Graysville. They are of Scotch- German descent, both living at Mount Union; he is retired. 'Squire Laird began his educational career at the Warriorsmark schools; he followed various pursuits in life; was for nine years with the United Gas Improvement Co., a corporation with many branches in many cities. 'Squire Laird was stationed principally at southern cities, looking after their interests. He returned to Mount Union and was for a period of time engaged in the restaurant business, located in the Beers block. He sold his business interests and engaged in the general insurance business with offices in the Poser building. In 1922 he was appointed Justice of the Peace, which office he has held continuously since. The 'Squire deals out justice in an impartial manner, weighing the evidence, and endeavors to prevent, if possible, cases from going to the county courts. He executes wills, writes deeds and conveyances, performs marriages, collects delinquent taxes. During the World War he helped along all Liberty Loan drives and activities. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., Mount Union; Juniata Valley Country Club, and its Realty Corporation. He is a stalwart Republican, faithful to its teachings. He conducts a book rental agency-books of latest and best sellers, books on travel, fiction, adventure, etc.; these are rented at rental rates. Also there is carried in stock smoker's supplies of all kinds and other articles too numerous to mention. The Lairds are Lutherans. For about twenty-six years the 'Squire has been a member of the church and Sunday school. The 'Squire has five brothers; Ralph E., dealer in Majestic radios; also installs window, door and street awnings. He was married to Mabel Stevenson, of Philadelphia, Pa.; Raymond, in business at Shermanstown, Pa.; he is married to Elma Enyeart; Russell, married to Jane Payne, of Columbia, Pa.; Homer and Wilbur, at home. 'Squire Laird was married to Nellie Howe, of Philipsubrg, Pa. They have one daughter, Grace, married to Cloyd Wilson, of Mount Union, Pa.
