MCCAULEY Alexandria, Pa. Retired: He was born at Elroy, Wis., April 14, 1886, a son of J.S tewart McCauley, who died in 1917, at the age of sixty years. He was married to Mary Murphy, who resides at Bellevue, Pa. John W. McCauley received his preliminary education at St. Mary's Parochial School at St. Paul, Minn., and at the public and grade schools of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He attended for two years the High School of Alexandria, Pa., and at Juniata College in 1904 and 1905, and at present is a Senior at Juniata College and will, in 1930, received his degree of Bachelor of Arts. Although handicapped by loss of eye-sight, this is a remarkable showing. It shows pluck, will power and a determination to overcome difficulties. He was a telegrapher for nine years; also freight classification clerk for the P.R.R. at Altoona, Pa. he was a volunteer in the World War. Enlisted at Altoona, Pa., in Signal Corps; was sent to Columbus Barracks; there for two weeks; thence to Camp Robinson, Sparta, Wis.; from there to Camp Wheeler, Macon, Ga.; to Camp McClellan, Armiston, Ala. He had charge of motor train; relieved the 405th Mounted Police; for two weeks was in C Battery of the 8th Field Heavy Artillery; previously was the light artillery; thence to Camp Merritt, N.Y.; went overseas on (George Washington); was nine days on voyage; arrived at Brest, France; for several days at rest camp; then moved on to Malestroit, France; to Meucon, an artillery camp. He had charge of twenty-four catapillar tractors from Nazaire to Meucon; reported to hospital because of eye trouble, which had developed into retinitis; was sent to Nazaire to hospital; embarked on (Great Northern), a hospital ship; arrived at Camp Mills March 19, 1919. He was in a base hospital at Camp Meade, also a hospital at Fort McHenry. He attended the Evergreen School for the Blind at Baltimore, Md., where he learned typewriting, basket, rug and hammock making and poultry raising, which business he conducted at Alexandria, Pa. He is a member of the W.P. Spyker American Legion Post No. 580, Alexandria, Pa.; also the 40 and 8 of Huntingdon, Pa., and F. and A.M., Hollidaysburg, Pa.; the Chapter, of Huntingdon, Pa.; the Consistory, of Coudersport, Pa. Prefers the Republican party in politics. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Alexandria, Pa.; also his wife and son. He has three brothers: Harry, Frank and Robert, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; all are electricians. One brother, Paul, is deceased; he was an electrician. John William McCauley was married to Maude L. Sollers, a daughter of I. Newton and Gertrude Sollers. They have one son, John William, Jr., seven years of age, attending school.
