L. McHugh Mapleton Depot, Pa. Merchant: Born at Mapleton Depot, Pa., November 22, 1895. A son of John McHugh, who died in 1926, at the age of sixty-one years. His wife was Annie Lemmon, who resides at Mapleton Depot, Pa. H.L. McHugh received his education at Mapleton Depot, Pa.; for eight years he was with the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation of Mapleton, Pa. On July 1, 1929, he established himself in the mercantile business, dealing in groceries and provisions. He was a tax collector for five years, for Mapleton borough. He belongs to the Presbyterian church; his wife also. He is an elder in the church and Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School. He has served as clerk on the election board. A World War veteran. Enlisted at Huntingdon, Pa.; sent to Columbus, Ohio, and from there to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; assigned to Co. A, 10th Inf.; was at this point for eight months; thence to Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois at this point for three months; went to Camp Custer, Mich.; was made a first-class private; was here for four months went to Camp Meade, for ten days, for discharge, with a service of twenty months. He is Adjutant of the American Legion Cower-De Mario Post, Mapleton, Pa.; I.O.O.F., No. 468, F. and A.M.; Mount Union, No. 688. A Republican. He has three brothers: John, a carpenter, Pittsburgh, Pa.; James, at home, has billiard parlor, Mapleton, Pa.; Edward, married to Marjorie Uttley; he is a postal clerk, Pittsburgh, Pa. Sisters are: Sallie, married to Charles Shoop; Ella, at home; one sister deceased, Amanda, who died at the age of fourteen years. H. L. McHugh was married to Irene McMullen, a daughter of A.M. and Jennie McMullen by Rev. Goshorn of the Presbyterian Church of Mapleton Depot, Pa. Note: The 1900 Mapleton Borough, Huntingdon County census lists John (45), Margaret (38), Sallie L. (14), James D. (12), Ella (9), Amanda C. (7), Hummell 4), and Edward (6/12) McHugh. In the 1910 and the 1920 census, his name is spelled Hummel.
