McHUGH Mapleton Depot Billiards: James D. McHugh was born at Mapleton Depot, Huntingdon County, Pa., November 21, 1887. A son of John A. and Annie (Lemmon) McHugh; the father is deceased. James D. McHugh received his education at the Mapleton grade schools. He was employed for fifteen years with the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation at Mapleton Depot. On March 27, 1927, he succeeded William McCorkle in the billiard business. Mr. McCorkle was murdered on the public highway. Mr. McHugh is a World War veteran. He enlisted at Huntingdon, Pa., in Co. F. Eighth Regiment, Penna. Vol. Inf., 28th Division; went to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia; there for nine months; thence to Camp Upton, Long Island; sailed on transport (Aquitania); on water seven days; landed at Liverpool, England; to Dover, England, by rail; to Calais, France; to Seningen, France. Was there for one month, in training; went to Chateau Thierry sector; in action for two weeks; moved on to Marne sector; was gassed; again in action at Ourcq sector; thence to Argonne Forest, where he was again in action, followed up by action in Thiacourt sector and Puvenelle Woods; also in action. Armistice signed, on November 11, 1919; sailed from St. Nazaire on transport (Pocohontas); eleven days returning; arrived at Philadelphia, Pa.; to Camp Dix, New Jersey, for discharge; went in as private, came out as Corporal. Total service of twenty-two months. He is a member of the Cower-De Mario Post, American Legion; is Second Commander; member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lewistown, Pa.; the L.O.O.M., No. 223, Huntingdon, Pa. He has three brothers: John, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Edward, Pittsburgh, Pa.; H.L., merchant, Mapleton Depot, Pa. Two sisters, Sallie Shoop and Ella, at home; Amanda is deceased; died at the age of fourteen years.
