Merchant and Herb Specialist; It might be well in this article to quote the words of the subject of this sketch, and they were; "I was not slow in taking advantage of every opportunity I had. I grasped them," and this sums up a successful life. Joseph Medling was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. There were many mouths to feed. He was the only support. He is a self-made man. He has won his spurs in the "school of hard knocks." Early in life he was compelled to quit school to support a large family. This is an honor one can look back upon in mature life. Let's sum the matter up and delve into its mysteries. Joseph Medling was born in Southing, Conn. Attended the common schools of Shade Gap; also Jefferson and Clearfield County Schools; later the Madera Normal; Lock Haven Normal; Therapy University, Chicago Ill., American University, Chicago, Ill; and a chemistry Course in I.C.S., Scranton, Pa., clearly showing that his education has not been neglected. He is the son of John and Nettie Medling; both are deceased. Joseph Medling was in the employ of the P.R.R. in Altoona, and was promoted to Engineer over the Middle Division. Has been State Police, as well as Game Warden. He belongs to the Loyal Order of Moose and P.O.S. of A., Washington Camp, No 346. Belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church. Has been a Sunday School superintendent, a class Leader, and a member of the Epworth League. Has one full brother, Albert Mason Medling, Altoona, Pa. Half-brothers and sisters are as follows; Cora, Della, Ella, Russell, Ira, Katie, Maude, Jean, Bert. As he says, these are scattered to the four winds; their locations are not known. One can see at a glance that it required pluck and energy. Joseph Medling was married to Amanda May Harkleroad. A son and daughter were born to this union. Both are deceased. At present he is interested in roots, barks, herbs of mother earth; also tonics; conducts a commercial business. He has built up a large trade, and in herbs and tonics he is conversant to their medicinal value. Bound to Succeed his motto, and if determination will bring results, he is heading that way.
