Harry Oppel was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 29, 1869, of German parentage. A. W. Oppel was his father, a tanner, who learned his trade in Germany; followed his trade in Philadelphia, Pa.; came to Black Log Valley, Huntingdon County, Pa.; was engaged in farming and the lumber business. He died in 1904, aged seventy-two years. His wife, before her marriage, was Hedwid Swoboda, who died in 1926, at the age of eighty-four. Harry Oppel received his schooling in Black Log Valley, Juniata County. He was a farmer and teamster for ten years, and during this time was in the employ of A. S. Welch, of Mt. Union, Pa. Has been with the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co., for a period of six years, five years of which were spent as foreman. He and his family are Methodists. He served one term as Councilman, Third Ward, Mt. Union, Pa. A Republican in politics. Has three brothers living: Herman, a forest ranger at Otelia, Huntingdon Co., Pa.; Frank, with the Penn Central L. & P. Co., Mt. Union, Pa.; George, a farmer, Wayne Township, Mifflin Co., Pa. Harry Oppel was married to Tillie Briggs, a daughter of Frank and Mary Briggs. The father is deceased; mother living at Newton Hamilton, Mifflin Co., Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Oppel have three daughters: Lillian, a graduate of the Mt. Union High School, who taught school at Mt. Union, Pa.; also in Wayne Township, Mifflin Co., Pa.; is married to L. E. Rorer, of Pittsburgh, Pa., with the Quaker Oats Co. Edna, a graduate of the Mt. Union High School; also Indiana State Normal; married to Robert Webb, a professor at Indiana State Normal School; Guila, a graduate of the Mt. Union High School, office work, Philadelphia, Pa.
