OPPEL Mount Union, Pa. Instructor: Walter R. Oppel was born in Juniata County, Pa. A son of Frank L. and Laura (Bollinger) Oppel, residents of Mount Union, Pa. Comes of a sturdy stock. Father of German descent; the mother of English-Irish parentage. Walter R. Oppel first was acquainted with the principles of an education at the Mt. Pleasant School of Juniata County, Pa. The parents moved to Mount Union, Pa., where he matriculated at the Mount Union High Schools. He graduated from the Grammar and Mount Union High School, Class of 1925. He after graduation attended the Cumberland Valley Teachers College, and striving to further his educational advantages, graduated from the Elizabethtown College, receiving his certificate of graduation. He taught school for four years; at Brush Run for one year, and for two years at the Long Hollow School; one year as instructor at Cedarcrest School; all in Wayne township, Mifflin County, Pa., and in the year 1929 he had charge of the fifth and sixth grades of the new consolidated schools at Newton Hamilton, Mifflin County, Pa. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and Sunday School; member of I.O.O.F., No. 677, Mt. Union, Pa. He believes in the principles of the Republican party. He is a member of the Juniata Valley Country Club. Golf, hunting and fishing he enjoys. He has three brothers, Franklin, Ralph and Herbert, all at home. Four sisters: Mrs. A. G. Lauver, Altoona, Pa.; Mrs. Willbur Higgins, Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Robert Reeder, Shirley Township, Pa., and Miss Mary Oppel, at home. Teaching is his profession. He has elevated tastes and a creditable ambition incited to apply himself diligently, so that by his own efforts, he is intellectually prepared for his life work. He is a popular young man who is bound to succeed. Walter Oppel was married September 14, 1929, to Emma Grace Campbell, at Frederick, Md. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R.B. Campbell, of Mount Union, Pa. She was graduated in June, 1929, from the Mount Union High School. The ceremony took place at Frederick, MD., by the Rev. G. Ellis Williams, of the Methodist Episcopal church.
