PAINTER Huntingdon, Pa. Tax Collector: William S. Painter was born at Rock Hill, Huntingdon Co., Pa., on February 25, 1865. He is a son of David M. Painter, who when the furnaces were in operation at Rock Hill years ago, had charge of them. He also had charge of a furnace at Mill Creek, Pa.; also the Hopewell Furnace in Bedford Co., Pa., and for fifteen years was a merchant at Hopewell, Bedford Co., Pa. Joseph Painter, his father, was a foreman at the old Greenwood Furnace (charcoal) for many years; he died fifty-three years ago. David M. Painter died in 1912, at the advanced age of eighty-four years. He married Martha Holmes; she was from New York State; she, too, is deceased, dying in 1924 at the age of eighty-two years. William S. Painter was but two years of age when his parents moved from Rock Hill to Mill Creek. The family then moved to Hopewell when he was nine years of age. At Hopewell he commenced his educational career. He taught school in Ground Hog Valley, Bedford Co., Pa., for one term, and for two terms at Carney, Bedford Co.; he then took up clerking in a general store at Hopewell; was there for ten years, and also was engaged in a clerical capacity at Defiance for ten years; he moved from Hopewell to Huntingdon, Pa., in 1904; he clerked in the clothing store of W.W. Hazlett at Huntingdon for eight years, and for years was in business. He was for ten years with the E.L. Stewart Co., wholesale and retail candy merchants. In 1925 he was a candidate fo the office of Tax Collector, but was defeated. However, he succeeded in getting his name before the voters, and in 1919 he again was a candidate for tax collector, and was successful. He has opened up an office at the corner of Fifth and Washington streets. He had held office in Hopewell Borough; was school director for six years. He belongs to the First Methodist church of Huntingdon, as does also his wife. He is a staunch Republican. His brothers are Edwin, residing at Hopewell, Pa.; he is cashier of the First National Bank of Hopewell, Pa. Harry is a telegraph operator for the B. & O. Railroad; he resides at Wildell, W. Va. James resides at Thomas, W. Va., Joseph is deceased; died at the age of sixty years. He has one sister, Henrietta, married to John L. Zeth; resides at Hopewell; he is retired. William S. Painter was married to Ella Lessig, a daughter of John Lessig, of Bedford Co., Pa. They have one son, J. Lessig. He is married ; the following are the children of this union; Mary and Martha; they are twins, thirteen years of age; Charles is eleven years of age; they all attend school. William S. Painter and wife have one daughter, D. Hope Painter; she is in the credit department of the Firestone Rubber and Tire Co., Akron, Ohio.
