With Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation: He was born at Spruce Creek, Huntingdon County, Pa. His mother died when he was three years of age; a son of Theodore Roof, who died in 1927. He married Sarah Long; she too is deceased, dying in 1896; both were of American birth. Charles Elmer Roof received his early schooling at Mapleton Depot, Huntingdon County, Pa., and for years has been with the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation. He is a member of the United Brethren Church of Mapleton Depot; his wife also. He is a World War veteran, Seventeenth Field Artillery, Second Division. He enlisted at Johnstown, Pa., August 25, 1917, went to Columbus Barracks; from there to Camp Robinson, Wisconsin; assigned to Co. C, Battery; left December 15, 1917, for Hoboken, N.J.; embarked on transport (Covington); left Hoboken, December 15, 1917; arrived at Brest, France, January 1, 1918; went direct to training camp at Valde-hone; there for two months; went into Verdun sector; thence to Chateau Thierry sector; in action for one month; then on to Soissons sector, in action; made a drive and left for Alsace Loraine for a period of rest, after which to St. Mihiel sector; in action; made another drive; left for Mont Blanc sector; in action, making drives along the line; left for Meuse-Argonne; armistice signed; followed German Army through Luxemburg, to Belgium; on to the Rhine, as the American Army of Occupation; left Rhineland, July 1, 1919, for Brest, France; came back on transport (Rhyndam); landed August 5, 1919, at Hoboken, N.J.; to Camp Dix, N.J.; discharged August 13, 1919; was discharged as a wagoner. He is a Past Grand I.O.O.F.; Past President P.O.S. of A.; a member of the Coher-De-Mario American Legion Post, Mapleton Depot, No. 322. He was married to Mabel Hunt at Huntingdon, Pa., a daughter of Samuel and Mary Hunt, the mother living, but the father is deceased. They have one son, Charles Edward, Jr., aged eight years. Baseball is Mr. Roof's hobby.
