CHARLES LUTHER ROWLAND, B.M. Juniata College Instructor of Music: Music hath charms. The soul is fed with music and he who hath no soul for music is groping in darkness. But this sketch has to do with one who has successfully guided the musical activities of Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa. Prof. Rowland was born at Greencastle, Pa., and in the rural schools of Washington County, Maryland, he began his education. John Rowland was his father and Susan (Miller) Rowland his mother; both are living; of Welch and German descent, at Mangansville, Maryland, He was born March 12, 1886. After receiving a preliminary education he began to shape his musical career. He entered the Blue Ridge Academy in 1906. This course was for preparatory work in music. Graduated at this institution in 1906. Continued in music course; later studied at Virginia Music Normal, then at Brandon Institute at Basic, Virginia, receiving the degree of B.M. and rounding out a musical course at Peabody Conservatory at Baltimore, Maryland, in 1911 and 1912; also conducted summer work in private tutoring. Taught music at Blue Ridge College, Union Bridge, Maryland, and Union College, Barboursville, Kentucky. Taught at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas, coming from there to Juniata College in 1920. He instructed in Baltimore, Maryland; privately, to George Castello in New York, R. G. Weigester and Oscar Seagle, the last named having a reputation which is international. Others well known whom he has instructed are William Claire Hall, and in Chicago, D. A. Clippinger. Prof. Rowland has had a musical career of twenty-three years. Is Director of Men's and Ladies" Glee Clubs, and Oratorio Society. Previously a member of Kansas State Musical Association, receiving the degree of "Fellow". He has three brothers: Albert M., married to Ella Lehman, Chambersburg, Pa.; Dr. W. D., Boston, Pa.; and Rev. John E. Rowland, married to Ella Hawbaker, Woodbury, Pa. Sisters are: Katharine M., married to Rev. Elmer S. Rowland, Hagerstown, Maryland; Anna E., married to Richard Reid, Hagerstown, Maryland; and Gertrude F., married to Harry Holsinger, Denton, Maryland. Prof. Rowland was married to Margaret Harlacher, Hanover, Pa. They have one son, Roland H., aged fifteen years, a Junior at the High School, Huntingdon, Pa.
