Manager Postal Telegraph Lines: The subject of this sketch, Elmer Schmittle, was born at Rock Hill, Huntingdon Co., Pa., on Oct. 12, 1889. He is a son of Grant Schmittle, a carpenter; he married Rebecca Renecker; her father was George Renecker; he was a Civil War veteran; he is deceased. Grant Schmittle and his wife reside at Rock Hill. Elmer Schmittle attended the Rock Hill public schools in his youth. After attaining a liberal education he was employed at Robertsdale, Pa., at the mines, as a pump runner, coal digger and fireman, after which he bought a farm; continued farming for six years; he then was employed wit the Penna. R.R. as a fireman, between Altoona and Harrisburg, Pa., for a period of one year. He then took up telephone line work with high-powered lines. He then accepted a position with the Postal Telegraph Company; has charge of line from Huntingdon, Pa., to Fannettsburg, Pa, for over one year. He also conducts a restaurant and rooming house at Orbisonia, Pa., which is a thriving business. he was Justice of the Peace in Cromwell township also tax collector. During the World War was on the registration board. He belongs to the Dunkard Church; his wife is also affiliated with the same church. At present he is on the Borough Council; is assistant chief of the fire department; he is a member of The B.P.O.E. of Huntingdon; prefers the Republican party as regards politics. He has two brothers: George, Claysburg, Pa., a steam shovel runner; he married Sarah Moore; William, Lewistown, Pa.; he married Charlotte Bare. Sisters are Mabel and Hazel. Elmer Schmittle was married to Anna Booher, a daughter of D. W. Booher; they have one son, Carl, aged five years; Anna, eight years, attending school; Boyd was accidentally shot in 1925. Mr. Schmittle is one of Orbisonia's staunch and energetic business men, who is always willing to work for the betterment of Orbisonia's interests, and ever ready to assist in any worthy cause.
