SHARP Barree, Huntingdon County, Pa. World War Veteran: Born at Barree, December 21, 1890. A son of Sheridan Sharp, now retired, and Clara B. (Smith) Sharp, both residing at Barree. Ray V. Sharp received his early school training at Barree. He has been a woodsman, and for twenty years has been with the E.R. Baldridge and Company stone quarries at Barree. He is a World War veteran. He volunteered at Tyrone, Pa., in 1917; went to Harrisburg, Pa., for examination; thence to Washington, D.C., to a mobilization camp; assigned to Co. F, 20th Engineers, 4th Battalion; was there from November 27 to January 4, 1917; left for Hoboken, New Jersey; embarked on transport (Amerika), a German interned vessel; arrived at Brest, France; was thirteen days on water; went to Blois, a city in Central France, a replacement camp, the place made famous for the presence of high caste personages; was there for two weeks; left by train for Van Vey, France; there for seven months; left for St. Julian; was there till January, 1919. Thence to Brest, France, for embarkation on battle cruiser (North Carolina); on January 28, 1919, arrived at Hoboken New Jersey; to Camp Mills, Long Island; to Camp Meade for discharge, March 4, 1919; in 36th Co., 20th Engineers, total service of fifteen months; he was transferred on board vessel to Co. E, 10th Engineers, on way over. An incident happened not on the program. While on leave of absence, he was picked up in Paris, was put in bastile prison for one night by a German sympathizer, wearing the colors and uniform of the United States soldiers; he was sent by train to a prison camp near Chateau Thierry; there were twelve hundred prisoners; they were badly treated; almost unbearable; was about one month in this place with small rations of food, and a cement floor for a resting place. He is a member of the Wm. P. Spyker American Legion Post, No. 520, Alexandria, Pa.; the L.O.O.M., Huntingdon, Pa. A Republican. He has one brother, George C. Sharp, Barree, who was married to Blanche Gardner. Three sisters: Elizabeth, Altoona, Pa.; Alice, married to Dale Bell, Huntingdon, Pa.; Mildred, married to Frank Davis, a merchant, of Barree, Pa. Ray V. Sharp was married to Mable Laird, a daughter of Harry and Maude Laird; they reside at Howard, Centre County, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Sharp have one son, Ray Earl, three years, and two daughters, Verna Jean, eight years of age, and Sylvia Ella, three months old.
