SHILEY Mount Union, Pa. Superintendent: Born at Mount Carmel, Pa., January 3, 1882, and received his preliminary schooling at the Mount Carmel graded schools. Emanuel Shiley was his father. The mother before marriage was Mary Curran, of Chambersburg, Pa.; the father died in 1928; the mother in 1889. Mr. Shiley is superintendent of the coal washing plant of the East Broad Top Coal and Iron Company. This method cleans and washes range, furnace and stoker coal by the use of sand and water by specific gravity, and has a capacity of five hundred tons per hour. Prior to coming to Mount Union, Mr. Shiley was the outside foreman for the Stannon Colliery, at Mahanoy Plane, a subsidiary of the Madeira Coal Company. Mr. Shiley is the inventor of a vibrating screen for separating coal, and it can be adjusted for the segregation of limestone, sand, cement, and general use. These vibrating screens are now being built by the Pittsburgh Coal Washer Company and are much in demand. These machines are wonderful in that the finest particles are absolutely separated. During the World War, Mr. Shiley was foreman of the Installation of the Marking and Labeling of spare parts at Hog Island, Philadelphia, Pa., this requiring considerable care. He belongs to the Woodmen of the World, of Frackville, Pa. Is a Republican in politics. He has three brothers: Howard Milton, of Camden, New Jersey; Charles Wesley, Nashville, Tenn., and Arthur James, Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Shiley was married to Katharine Welch, of Frackville, Pa.; they have four children, Rita, Elmer, Grace and Leonard. He is a member of the Evangelical Church. A pleasant man to meet; has the confidence of his fellowmen and well liked by all who come in contact with him.
