SHOPE Saltillo, Pa. Agent, East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company: The Shopes have had a part in shaping the destinies of this section. The grandfather, Benjamin Shope, owned the Shope farm of two hundred acres. Each daughter was given one hundred acres each. The father of Benjamin O. Shope is David F. Shope and Jennie K. (Fulton) Shope, both living and residing at Saltillo, Pa. Both American born. The subject of this sketch, Benjamin O. Shope, was born at Saltillo, Pa., May 11, 1881, and his early schooling was at Saltillo, Pa., public schools. He attended Juniata College; taught school one term in Clay Township; one term in Todd Township; two terms in Robertsdale, Pa., and two terms in Saltillo, Pa., all in Huntingdon County, Pa. He was appointed agent for the East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company; besides agent Railway Express Company; also agent Underwriters' Fire Insurance, auto, accident and liability. Was for two years in hardware business at Saltillo, Pa., form 1907 to 1909; was Borough Clerk, member and Secretary of School Board; also Councilman. Attends the Baptist Church and Sunday School. Belongs to the Free and Accepted Masons, Cromwell Lodge, No. 572, Orbisonia, Pa.; 32nd Degree, Scottish Rite Consistory, Harrisburg, Pa.; A.A.O. of the Mystic Shrine, Jaffa Temple, Altoona, Pa. Believes in principles of the Republican party. Has three sisters: Mrs. Bessie Stake and Mrs. R.D. Steel, Altoona, Pa.; Mrs. Ruth Kimmel, Saltillo, Pa. Three brothers: Herbert and John B. Shope, Saltillo, Pa. and Harold V. Shope, Teller, First National Bank, Mount Union, Pa. Benjamin C. Shope was married to Lillian Kimmel, Huntingdon, Pa., July 2, 1902. Three daughters: Mary E., teaching school at Philadelphia, Pa.; Marian E. and Lillian K. Two sons: Ned Fulton Shope, attending Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science; graduated 1929; and Benjamin, Jr., eleven years, first year in High School. Mr. Shope is fond of out-door recreation belongs to Juniata Valley Colony Club and Juniata Valley Realty Corporation, Mt. Union, Pa., and is interested in clean sport.
