Teller, First National Bank: It might be well to give a brief summary of the forebears of the subject of this sketch. D. F. Shope, Sr., was a merchant of Saltillo, Huntingdon County, Pa. Born in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pa., November 24, 1854, a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Sechrist) Shope. The father was born near Loysville, Perry County, Pa., in 1819. D.F. Shope, Sr., beginning at the age of seventeen, taught school; he was postmaster under President Cleveland. And now as to Harold Vernon Shope. Born at Saltillo, Huntingdon County, Pa., March 12, 1894. Began his schooling at Saltillo; graduated, and attended Summer Normal School at Saltillo and Three Springs. Parents are David F. and Jennie (Fulton) Shope; both are living at Saltillo, Pa. He later in life learned the machinist trade at Baltimore; in 1913, was engaged in meat and provision business at Mount Union, Pa. for a period of three years. In 1923 was appointed a teller at the First National Bank at Mount Union, Pa. At present is Borough Auditor. A member of the Methodist Church of Mount Union, Pa. A church choir director and Sunday School chorister; a teacher in Sunday School. Belongs to the F. & A.M., No. 688; Harrisburg Consistory; a Shriner, Jaffa Temple, Altoona, Pa.; and Odd Fellow, No. 677, American Legion, Simpson-Hunt Post, a Past Commander. A World War veteran, beginning at State College; from May 16, 1918, to July 13, 1918, in 3rd Casualty Co., 1st Pro. regt., Ordnance Training Camp; was made Sergeant; went to Camp Hancock, Ga.; was made bugler at that place August 20, 1918. Overseas, Ordnance, Det. 336th Heavy Field Artillery, to October 22, 1918. Transferred to Ordnance Det. 335th Light Field Artillery, 87th Division, to March 13, 1919; to 5th Co., 154th Depot Brigade; discharged at Camp Meade, March 26, 1919. He has three brothers, Benjamin O., Saltillo, Pa.; Herbert G., Saltillo, and John B., Saltillo. Three sisters: Bessie Stake, a widow, Saltillo, Pa.; Ruth E. Kimmel, Saltillo, Pa., and Lola M. Steel, Altoona, Pa. Harold Vernon Shope was married to Margaret Mae Jones, August 25, 1928. A school teacher, a daughter of the late Alonzo Jones, a former postmaster and County Commissioner. Hunting and fishing, tennis and golf, are his pastimes; belongs to Juniata Valley Country Club, and Mount Union Club. Well liked by his fellowmen and the community at large.
