Farmer: John Shue might well be called the model farmer of this section. A Captain of Agriculture; owns four hundred and twenty-five acres comprising adjoining farms, and one hundred and twenty-five acres known as the Brown place. On this farm, about sixty-five years ago, was enacted the most brutal tragedy as this section of the State had ever witnessed, when Bob McConahy murdered single-handed seven persons through a desire to obtain these one hundred and twenty-five acres of land. He paid the penalty of that law which says, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." Needless to say he was executed on the scaffold. And now for a glimpse into the life of the Shues. John Shue's father, as well as his wife's father, was a Civil War veteran; both are deceased. They fought for the cause of the Union. John Shue's father is a son of Andrew and Rebecca (Swartz) Shue. He was born at Fort Littleton, Fulton County, Penna., and derived his education at the Three Springs schools. Has been practically a farmer all his life. A school director of Shirley township for seven years. He is interested in church work, as is also the family. He is President of the Board of Trustees and Steward at present. Belongs to Singer's Gap Methodist Church and is a Sunday School pupil; has served on School Board and Election Board, and strongly upholds the doctrine of the Democratic party. Brothers and sisters are as follows: Henry, Dauphin, Dauphin County, Pa., truck and gardening; Samuel, Emmigsville, Pa., a farmer; Amanda, married to Bart Walls, farmers, Shy Beaver, Huntingdon County, Pa.; Mrs. Fannie Myers, a widow, Shirleysburg, Pa.; Rebecca Banks, a widow; Mertie, married to Walter Swigart, York, Pa.; Emma, married to Phares Geiselman, Jacobus, Pa.; Ella and Catharine, deceased. Hamman, Pitcairn, Pa., formerly a school teacher; Katie, married to Samuel Runk, a former school teacher, deceased; Mildred, married to J.L. He was formerly a graduate of the Mount Union High School. B. Frank Shue is a Mount Union High School graduate, attending Juniata College, a senior. Is pastor of Clearville Methodist Church, and has been since March, 1929. Wilmer Shue, another graduate of Mount Union High School, and also a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, is principal of the Drumore High School, Lancaster County, Pa. Mary Shue, teaching at New Cumberland, Pa., a graduate of Mount Union High School. Pauline Shue, a teacher and student at Shippensburg State Normal School; graduate Mount Union High School. There is possibly not another family in the county which can claim such distinction along educational lines. A sturdy industrious family, who have set the place for others to follow.
