C. C. SMITH, A.M., A.B. Mount Union, Pa. Supervising Principal: Education has made rapid strides in recent years, and Mount Union has had a share in its growth, and to undertake to present to the public what has brought about this remarkable change would require considerable space. But one who is held high in the educational world and highly endorsed by leading educators is Prof. C. C. Smith, A.M., A.B. A glimpse into his educational career is to reveal a storehouse of knowledge. However, a brief resume will not be amiss. One must begin at his earliest training, which began at Red Lion, Pa. Here he laid the foundation of his afterlife. He planned well, improved his opportunities. He was the architect of his educational career. He entered Lebanon Valley College in 1908, at sixteen years of age, and this college gave him his degree of A.B., and then that mighty institution of learning, Columbia University, New York City, honored him with the degree of A.M. in 1919. These were honors conferred, and now to go back to his earlier training, the city of his birth, Red Lion High School, from which he received his diploma in 1907. Others followed, among which was Superintendent's diploma from the Teachers' College of New York, and Juniata College, with special courses. His professional experience has been varied. He has taught at Hallam, Pa.; rural school work, 1907-08; Eldersridge Academy, History and Mathematics, 1912-13; Mount Union, Mathematics and Athletics, from 1913-15; Frostburg, Md., Education in Normal School, 1921-22-23; Summer Sessions, Mount Union, Pa., Principal High School 1915 to 1920; Mount Union, Pa., Supervising Principal of Schools, 1920 to 1930, and during Summer Session of 1925, taught school efficiency at Juniata College; and from 1925 to 1919, he had been Director of Practice Teaching at Juniata College. He is a member of the Juniata College Faculty. He gives lectures during the year to all college seniors. These seniors are then sent in groups of four to six for observation and actual teaching. It is the duty of Prof. Smith to criticise their teaching, plans, technique, pupil reaction, etc. A partial list of graduate work done by Prof. Smith at Columbia University follows: City School Administration, Administration Problems of High School, The Teaching of Practical Arts in the Junior High School, School Surveys, and other Investigations in Educational Administration, The Principal and His School. These and six other courses of equal importance; these he mastered under noted instructors which Columbia University has on its staff. Prof. Smith has been highly endorsed by such educators as Dr. M.G. Brumbaugh, late President of Juniata College, and Dr. C.C. Ellis, as also the Placement Bureau of Teachers' College, Columbia University, and by others well up in the educational world; also the State Department of Public Instruction, Harrisburg, Pa. So much for his educational ability, and now his local activities since 1920: Secretary Local Chapter of the American Red Cross for eight years, Chairman of the Tuberculosis Committee for five years, Member of Chamber of Commerce, Member Boy Scout Council, Executive Committee Local Athletic Association, Member County Sunday School Board. A Presbyterian and Independent Republican. His fraternity consist of F. and A.M.; Harrisburg Consistory; A.A.O.N.M.S.; the P.O.S. of A. and I.O.O.F. Prof. Smith is teacher of a Ladies Bible Class. It might be well to note briefly his parentage: He is a son of Adie Smith and Mary (Heim) Smith; she died in May, 1911; German descent, Red Lion, Pa. Prof. C. C. Smith was married to Mary Norris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luden Norris, of Mount Union, Pa. They have two sons, Charles Norris, aged eleven years, and Robert L., one year and three months. For outdoor diversion the Professor prefers tennis. Prof. Smith has set the pace for other schools to follow. He has been the curator who visioned a higher plane of learning and applied it, and he has succeeded where others have failed. Note: Charles C. Smith, 39 (Superintendent, Public Schools), Mary G. Smith, 33, Charles N. Smith, 11, and Robert L. Smith, 2 2/12, are listed in the 1930 Mount Union, Huntingdon County census.
