Union, Pa. Merchant: The subject of this sketch, Raymond Hartzel Smith, has been very successful along the line of the business he follows, that of grocery and provision. He has succeeded in building up a large and fast-increasing business. He was born at Locust Grove, Fulton County, Pa., on June 11, 1889. His early school training was in Fulton county, after which the family came to Mt. Union, Pa., when he again attended the Mt. Union High School, and working at various places. He began to learn the trade of bricklaying, which continued for a period of ten years, becoming very proficient. He is a son of Banner Smith, who was married to Katharine Showalter, she being deceased. Raymond Smith and wife belong to he Presbyterian Church, and also attend Sunday School. In politics he is a Democrat. He has two brothers, Wm. A., at Mt. Union, Pa.; Jesse G. and Herbert are deceased. He was married to Lena Ripple, of Mt. Union, a daughter of the late John Ripple, a business man of Mt. Union. Three children have come to bless this union: Anna Katharine, fourteen; Gladys Louise, twelve years; Betty Jean, nine years. Mr. Smith is a good-natured, home-loving man; has made many friends, and is regarded as a good citizen. Hunting when the season is in is his pastime.
