SNYDER Mount Union, Pa. Retired: Civil War Veteran. Born in Franklin Co., Pa., May 23, 1845. A son of John Snyder, who died at the age of sixty-two years, and Susanna Jones Snyder. She was born in Franklin County, Pa. James K. Snyder's mother died when he was seven years of age. He attended school near Shade Gap; also the Rock Hill school and a school in Black Log Valley. He enlisted in 1861, when sixteen years of age, and served in two companies, Co. I and Co. A, 49th Penna. Vol. Inf., Capt Spanogle and Colonel Irwin, of Lewistown, Pa., who was Captain of the Logan Guards at Lewistown, Pa. James K. Snyder enlisted at Perrysville, now Port Royal, Juniata Co., Pa.; was sworn in at Harrisburg, Pa.; the company was made up at Perrysville, Juniata Co., Pa.; left for Washington, D.C. He was in fifty-three engagements, including Seven Days' Battle, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Antietam, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House and Cold Harbor; also was with Sheridan in the Valley Campaign and fought at Cedar Rock; was wounded on the Rappahannock, in the left knee; discharged at Washington, D.C. For thirty years he lived at Shade Gap, Pa.; was with the Harbison- Walker Refractories Co., at Mount Union, Pa., for sixteen years. He has done some farming. Was a constable for eleven years at Shade Gap, Pa.; belongs to the Methodist Church, wife also, at Shade Gap, Pa.; he was Secretary of the School Board, Shade Gap, for three years; was on the election board at various times; also Street Supervisor at Shade Gap, Pa. He belongs to Capt. Brice T. Blair, G.A.R. Post, No. 118, Shade Gap, Pa. A Democrat. He has one sister living, Mary Montgomery, Shade Gap, Pa.; four sisters deceased, Kate, Jennie, Belle and Susie. Two brothers deceased, John and George. He was married to Margaret E. Fernberg, daughter of Thomas and Mary Fernberg; both parents are deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder have eleven children: Oren, Allenport, a suburb of Mount Union, Pa., a foreman; Newton, Shade Gap, Pa.; Lorenzo, a foreman, Mount Union, Pa.; Chalmer, Shade Gap, Pa.; Norman, Shade Gap, Pa. Four daughters: Ida, married to Samuel Price, Shade Gap, Pa.; Bertha Jane, married to Will Price, Shade Gap, Pa.; Carrie, married to James Norris, Lewistown, Pa.; Blanche, married to Paul Shugarts, a foreman, Mifflin, Pa.
