STAINS Springfield Township, Huntingdon Co., Pa. Justice of the Peace: Was born at Altoona, Pa., December 5, 1882, and at Millville, a suburb of Altoona, he received his preliminary education. A son of Sidman Scott Stains, who was among the early settlers in this section in 1777 [sic]. Both he and his grandfather built the first coke ovens for Dr. Baker, in Cambria County, Pa.; also the Penna. R.R. bridge at Johnstown, Pa. The original foundation of the Altoona Hospital was built by them. Sidman Stains was married to Delilah Miller. Both are deceased, the father dying in 1924, aged seventy-two; the mother died in 1922 aged sixty years. The father was a car repairman for the Penna. R.R.; also a stonemason. Charles S. Stains attended the Fourth Ward schools of Huntingdon, Pa.; the Fredericksburg, Blair County, schools; also the Lafayetteville schools of Blair County, Pa. Was employed with Penna. R.R. at the age of seventeen years. Went to Port Perry, Pittsburgh District, as brakeman with the B & O. Railroad; he joined the army December 22, 1901; served nine years in the Philippines, at three different times. Taught school in the Philippines, at Echaugney, teaching the American language; had thirty pupils. He was first discharged at Fort Hancock, New Jersey; second discharge at Fort Crook, Nebraska; third discharge, Laredo, Texas. In Philippines for seven years. His discharge shows twenty- three skirmishes and engagements. Mr. Stains and wife belong to the United Brethren Church, Mt. Carmel, Springfield township. Present time is Secretary of School Board; one term Inspector; on Election Board, three terms, as clerk; is Justice of the Peace. Belongs to the A.A.A.; also a charter member of the John C. Dunkle Spanish-American War Veterans' Association. Is a Republican. Has one sister, Gertrude, married to John Wiggins; they have three children, Charles, George, and Catharine. Mr. Stains was married to Margaret Van Orman, daughter of Leslie and Lavena Van Orman. One son, John S., six years; two daughters, Gertrude, eleven years, and Hannah, nine years. Two sons died in infancy. He has been at this location for seventeen years, a farmer.
