STEELE Shirleysburg, Pa. Farmer: About midway between Mt. Union, Pa., and Shirleysburg, one will find a well kept farm, a home beautifully located, a small stream running throughout, and broad acres which produce abundantly. This is the home of William T. Steele, a progressive farmer. For years he has been located at this place. William Steele was born at Calvin, Huntingdon County, Pa. A son of Charles Steele, who died in 1868, and whose wife prior to marriage was Sarah Smith; she died in 1909. The mother was of English descent, the father of German descent. Commenced his early career at schools of the district in which he was born; later on in life decided on a better education than that which the district afforded, and enrolled with McComb State Normal at Illinois, in 1881. Then a course at Juniata College, Pa., in 1889, and later at the Iron City Business College, at Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1890 and 1892. A considerable part of his life has been devoted to farming. For ten years he drove a wool wagon over eight counties, gathering wool, exchanging for woolen blankets and flannels. Four years was school director of Union Township, and for sixteen years school director of Shirley Township. Has been Superintendent of the Sunday School and at present is an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Shirleysburg, Pa. Has served on election board. Is a Democrat in politics. Mr. Steele comes of a family of fifteen children, ten of whom grew to maturity and married, nine sons and six daughters. The brothers living are Dr. B.P Steele, of McVeytown, Pa.; James S., of Huntingdon, Pa. The late John A. Steele, Ex-Sheriff of Huntingdon County, Pa. was a brother. The sisters are Jeanette Wright, Washington, D.C.; Minnie Silkknitter, Altoona, Pa.; Sarah Bohner, Altoona, Pa.; Zellah Smith, Altoona, Pa.; Prudence Haines, Cleveland, Ohio, and Elizabeth Wilson, Huntingdon, Pa., deceased. Mr. Steele was married to Luetta Devor, of Spring Run, Franklin County, Pa. Her father was J.J. Devor; the mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Brinley; they were farmers; both are deceased. The children of William T. Steele are: Don O., married to Carrie Lynn, an electrician, of Huntingdon, Pa.; they have one son, E. Marie, married to Rev. Goshorn, of Newton Hamilton, Pa.; one daughter to this union, Bruce D., married to Freda Shue, of Hill Valley; one son, Frank B.; Anna C. was married on Washington's birthday, February 22, 1929, to Joseph McElroy, Jr.; the son of Joseph E. McElroy, Sr., of Huntingdon, Pa. Miss Anna will be remembered as being a school teacher for nine years, and also as County Auditor. The Steeles, wherever located, have long been held as good citizens, with the respect of all.
