STOUFFER, B.O. McConnellstown, Pa. One has to go back for a period of time to recall the activities of Adam L. Stouffer. At one time he occupied the attention of the public with dramatic recitations and humorous impersonations. The Local News, Huntingdon, Pa., of that period, remarks that Adam Stouffer delighted his audiences with several readings. He is a fine elocutionist, and then to Prof W. M. Benson, ex-Superintendent Public Schools, Huntingdon, Pa., who says: "It gives me pleasure to testify to Mr. Stouffer's unusual ability as a reciter." The authors he impersonated and represented were James Whitcomb Riley, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and others. He was skilled in the art of oratory, so much so that the Neff College of Oratory of Philadelphia, Pa., conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Oratory. And now to his early and later life. He was born at McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Pa., a son of Samuel Stouffer, whose father cleared what is known as the Stouffer farm, east entrance to McConnellstown, back in 1793. He died in 1914. The grandmother's name before her marriage was Mary Berkholder, from which Berks county derived its name. They were of German descent, and settled in Berks County. Adam L. Stouffer, after receiving a preliminary education at McConnellstown, Pa., attended Juniata College, West Chester State Normal, Ursinus College, Neff College of Oratory, Emerson College of Dramatic Expression, and the Jones School of Salesmanship of Chicago, Illinois, receiving a certificate of graduation; also gave private instruction in oratory at Philadelphia, Pa. He taught public schools at Waterstreet, McConnellstown and Petersburg, five years, all in Huntingdon County, Pa. Belongs to the Reformed Church, member of Board of Trustees, Sunday School teacher of Adult Bible Class. A Republican. Has served on School Board. Has one brother, Harry C., at Watkins Glen, New York. Four sisters: Jennie, married to Calvin Laird, Alexandria, Pa.; Margaret, married to Vance H. Riley, Williamsburg, Pa.; Lettie, married to Addison Goodfellow, a mechanical draftsman, York Manufacturing Company; has charge of thirty draftsmen in office; Ella, married to Calvin Etters, West Chester, Pa. Adam Stouffer owns and operates two limestone quarries at McConnellstown, Pa. A shrewd business man and capable.
