TATE Mill Creek, Pa. John W. Tate dates his ancestry back to Nahum Tate, of the Ninth Century, a Poet Laureate of England, a remarkable lineage. His grandfather, John Tate, ran the first ferry across the river at Jackstown Narrows, in 1840, so that one can see the Tates have had some interest in past history. But to return to John Tate, of Mill Creek. We find he was born at Mill Creek, April 19, 1872. In the local schools of Mill Creek he began his schooling, and from this initial instruction he began his career. Later on in life he attended Juniata College, from 1888 to 1892, and to further advance his education, enrolled at Dickinson Seminary, in 1893. Thus we see he has been well fitted to be on the school board for twenty-five years. A record hard to surpass. He taught one year at Airydale, Huntingdon County, Pa.; also one year at Centre School, Brady township. A son of Jeremiah Tate and Leah (Ritter) Tate, of Mill Creek. English-Irish nationality. Mr. John W. Tate has been engaged in the meat business for three years. In 1905 he took first manufacturing census for the Department of Commerce. To-day he represents lumber and monumental interests. Has served on election board, and was first Councilman, 1908 to 1911, and second Burgess, 1912. During the World War was police officer on the Middle Division of the Penna. R.R.; also Deputy Sheriff. A member of the Grange. Independent in politics. A member of the Methodist Church for twenty years; Lutheran Church for fifteen years; Superintendent of Sunday School for thirty-five to forty years. Brothers are: D. Frank, Mill Creek; George A., Mill Creek; Harry L., Mill Creek. One sister, Mrs. Philip Corbin, Mill Creek; one sister deceased. Mr. Tate married Elizabeth Hughes in 1900; she died in 1909.
