Farmer: Was born in Juniata County, Pa., near Oakland Mills, March 24, 1892. A son of Harvey Wileman, who was a saw miller, in Juniata county, who died in 1927, at the age of fifty-seven years, and of Anna McElrath, who died in 1899. Charles Wileman was seven years of age when his mother died. He attended the Oakland Mills schools; was previously a farmer and teamster; was with the Harbison-Walker Refractories Company for one year. On August 19, 1929, he engaged in farming on what is known as the Cassady farm, near Mount Union, Pa. He is a World War veteran. Volunteered at Altoona on May 23, 1917; went to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia; there for nine months; went to Camp Merritt, N.J.; sailed for Liverpool, England; went to Dover; to Calais; was at rest camp for one week; thence to the Marne; in action at Aisne- Marne; to Chateau-Thierry; the Champagne sector; to Olse-Aisne; to the Meuse Argonne and also defensive sector; at the Meuse Argonne, on second day, over the top, he received a bullet wound in the left shoulder; was sent to field hospital 109th; was operated upon and bullet taken out; went to base hospital 25 at Alray; there from September 28 to December 2, 1919; went to evacuation camp for two months; left for Bordeaux, France; embarked on vessel (Mongolia), a hospital ship; arrived at Hoboken, N.J.; sent to Camp Merritt for one week; discharged at Camp Dix, N.J.; enlisted as private and finished as first class private, with a total service of twenty-two and one-half months. He has one brother, Cloyd, Three Springs, Pa.; one brother deceased, James, a World War man; one brother, Banks, died in infancy. Two sisters: Cora Mooney, Carlisle, Pa.; Rebecca Huffman, Orbisonia; one sister, Elizabeth, deceased. Charles Wileman was married to Bertha Detwiler, a daughter of J.M. and Elsie Detwiler, of Williamsburg, Pa. Three daughters: Phyllis Romaine, seven years; Leona, five years; Alean, nine years; one son, Norris Charles, died in infancy.
