Christian Prough was born ca. 1822 at Marklesburg, Todd Tp., Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He married first Margaret Crum, the mother of Silas. Margaret Crum Prough d. between 1842 and 1847. , He then married Mrs Mahala Estep Baker on 2 December 1847 by Rev. James Elderdice, a Methodist minister of Cassville, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Eve Prough also stated that Christian and Mahala spent their wedding night at her house in Paradise Furnace, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Christian enlisted on 27 February 1862 in Co. D, 107th Regiment of Pennsylvania. Christian’s physical description at enlistment was, light complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, 5 foot 11 inches tall. The 107th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania was recruited in the counties of Franklin, York, Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Lancaster, Schuylkill, Luzerne, Mifflin, Juniata, Bedford, and Fulton (Christian and Silas were from Huntingdon however). The regiment was mustered into the U.S. service at Harrisburg, 5 March 1862, for a three years term. Four days later it proceeded to Washington, then to Cloud’s Mills, where it was assigned on 16 April to Duryea’s brigade, Ord’s division, McDowell’s corps. In May it was posted on the Orange & Alexandria railroad to guard the portion between Manassas and Catlett’s station. On the 28th it was sent to Front Royal, but returned to Catlett’s station and remained there until 5 August 1862. Christian was discharged on 2 June 1862. On his Certificate of Disability for Discharge his examining Physician certified that said Christian Prough was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Epilepsia. He was discharged at Washington D. C. He applied for pension 8 January 1887 while living in Calvin, Huntingdon Co., PA. His disabilities listed were ‘While loading commissary goods, received an injury to his privates and back from which he still suffers’. He had convulsions on 30 April 1862. Christian was approved for pension for ‘disease of testicles and lumbago’. Later disabilities included eyes, testicles, rheumatism and deafness. Christian died on 19 March 1898. He is buried in Wright Cemetery, Calvin, Union Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
