Appleby, 79, or 34 East Milford Str., Mount Union, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 1983 in the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey where she had been a patient since Oct. 21. Born April 30, 1903 in Pine Grove, she was the daughter of Charles and Kate (Culbert) Workman. She was united in marriage to Fred B. Appleby Sr. on May 18, 1927. Her husband survives along with a daughter, Mrs. William (Margaret) Kemmler of Greencastle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and her husband's cousin Josephine Appleby Shaw of Hillsdale, N.J., who had formerly resided in the Appleby home. A son, Fred B. Appleby Jr. preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Of the Episcopal faith, she was active for many years in the First United Presbyterian Church in Mount Union where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir. She was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 280, Mount Union in which she had also served as a district deputy. During World War II, she was Home Service chairman for the Red Cross and chairman of the Knitting Committee. A former member and past treasurer of the Shakespeare Club, she was a member or the Mount Union Historical Society. She was a 1924 graduate of the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, from the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home in Mount Union, the Rev. Elaine P. Africa officiating. Internment was made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D.
