Appleby Sr., 85, of 34 E. Milford St., Mount Union, died at 2:55 a.m. Monday, March 7, 1988, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held March 9 at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, the Rev. Elaine P. Africa officiating. Interment was made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D. Born Oct. 18, 1902, in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of Thomas Bruce and Margaret (Peterson) Appleby. He was united in marriage to Ethel M. Workman on May 18, 1927. His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 1983. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Kemmler of Burnt Cabins, and Mrs. Josephine Appleby Shaw of Hummelstown, who had made her home with the Appleby family. One son, Fred B. Appleby, Jr., preceded in death. There are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Appleby was a member on the United Presbyterian Church of Mount Union, where he was a church elder. He was a member of the Mount Union Lions Club and for 33 years had served on the board of directors of Unitas National Bank. A member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 688, Mount Union, for 50 years, he was also a member of the Harrisburg Consistory, the Scottish Rite of Huntingdon County, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon. Owner of Appleby's Pharmacy, Mount Union, since 1929, he graduated from Mount Union High School with the Class of 1921 and was a 1924 graduate of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Memorial contributions may be made in the Mount Union Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Mount Union.
