Atherton, 78, formerly of Lucy Furnace, died 10:40 a.m., Friday, October 24, 1986, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, where he had been a resident for one year. His death followed an extended illness. Funeral services were held October 27, from the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, the Rev. Robert Elridge officiated. Interment was made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D. He was born February 24, 1908, in Wayne Township, Mifflin County, the son of Charles and Mary (Hardy) Atherton. He was united in marriage to Thelma M. Woodward, who preceded him in death on July 19, 1968. Mr. Atherton is survived by the following children: Mrs. Ronald (Betty) Myers, Mount Union; Mrs. Glen (Charlotte) Jaymes, Silverford Heights, Mount Union, R.D. 1; Mrs. Robert (Joy) Wennick, Chambersburg; Mrs. Robert (Vonnie) Hileman, Aliquippa; Mrs. Ronald (Nancy) Gerholt, Mount Union, R.D. 1; Kenneth R., Mount Union, R.D. 2; Benjamin R., Orlando, Florida; Max L., Mount Union, R.D. 1; Thomas E., Mount Union, R.D. 1; Mrs. Harry (Kathy) Park, Silverford Heights; Ricky A., Mount Union R.D. 1; Bradley K., Mount Union, R.D. 1; Mrs. Trudie McClain, Mount Union, R.D. 1; and Mrs. Terry (Lori Ann) Rosentsteel Mount Union. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the following sisters: Mrs. Maida Buck, Reading; Mrs. Edward (Ann) Rosensteel, Delaware; Mrs. Robert (Helen) Wagner, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Charles (Mary) Radel, Huntingdon; Mrs. Glenn (Emma) Parsons, Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. Joseph (June) Hollobaugh, Huntingdon. Five brothers and one granddaughter preceded him in death. Mr. Atherton was a member of the Cedar Crest Lucy Furnace Chapel. He retired on diability after 25 years at Harbison-Walker Refractories, Mount Union.
