John Gemmill Cresswell died suddenly yesterday morning at 4 o'clock of heart trouble at the home of his sister, Mrs. Eliza C. Barr, at 1307 North Washington avenue. The deceased was born at Alexandria, Huntingdon county, August, 1837, and at death was aged 62 years and 7 months. His wife died November 14, 1898, without issue, and since December, 1898, he has made his home with his sister, Mrs. E. C. Barr, in this place. Mr. Cresswell had been in the employ of Campbell Bros., contractors, of Altoona, for many years, and also for several years as baggagemaster on the Pennsylvania railroad. In 1893 or 1894 he suffered from a sun stroke, since which time he has been physically incapacitated from attending to business. On Wednesday last he attended the funeral obsequies of his friend, Dr. Calvin Porter, at Alexandria, and on Thursday was in his usual health and able to clean the pavement in front of his home of the accumulated snow and slush. He was a consistent member and a faithful attendendant at the several services of the Alexandria Presbyterian church, and a whole-souled, genial associate. The writer first knew him as a salesman in the mercantile establishment of Clement Jaggard, at Altoona, in the latter fifties. He is survived by one brother, Gemmill Cresswell, of Petersburg, Huntingdon county, and one sister, Mrs. Eliza C. Barr, of Tyrone. The remains will be take to this station Monday at noon and placed on board mail express east, to be conveyed to Barree, and from thence to Alexandria, where funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian church, to be conducted by Rev. Albert J. Weisley and Rev. Mr. Stewart. Interment to follow in the Alexandria cemetery. Morning Tribune (Altoona), Saturday, March 3, 1900
