WALTERS, 88, of Church Street, Saxton, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at 4:55 am., at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. His death was unexpected. Born Sept. 5, 1913. in Youngstown, Ohio, he was a son of the late Lemuel S. and Bessie Marie (Molter) Walters. He married Ruth V. Masood Aug. 25, 1947, in Cumberland, Md. Mrs. Walter survives at home. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister: Herbert Walters, James Walters, Donald Walters and Dorothy Perkins. Mr. Walters was a member of the Saxton United Methodist Church. A graduate of Youngstown High School. he received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Youngstown College and his MBA from Columbia University. He was a factory representative for Goodyear Rubber Co. in Houston, Texas. He later moved to California, where he was a property management supervisor for the city of San Diego. He retired in 1979, after 20 years of service. He also worked as a real estate agent in Houston and San Diego. For four and one-half years, he served as a radar operator in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Walters was a member of the Hillman Lodge F&AM 481 and Mahoning Valley Consistory. both of Youngstown. and Al-Bahr Shrine in San Diego, where he served as chaplain. Funeral services will he held at the convenience of the family at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with the Rev. Todd Templeton officiating. Interment will be made in the Duvall Cemetery, Six Mile Run, RD. Gladys F. AXON, 92, of 511 Essex Ave., Baltimore, Md., died Saturday. Dec. 1, 2001, at 11 p.m., at her home. Born Dec. 31, 1908, in Saxton, RD., she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah Reed. She married Myron Axon Aug. 23, 1937, in Saxton. He preceded her in death Jan. 11, 1978. Surviving are two children: Gailord Axon of Baltimore, Md., with whom she was residing, and Linda Hawkins of Derry, N.H. There are four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Martha Dixon and Jeanette O’Neal. Mrs. Axon was a member of the Raven Run Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College, where she received her certificate of education. She was a school teacher in Essex, Md.. and retired after 25 years of service. Funeral services will he held Wednesday, Dec. 5. at noon, at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel. Saxton, with the Rev. Dan Hammil officiating. Interment will he made in the Bunker Hill Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. Charles F. "Tink" SHETROM, 81, of 1319 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died Monday. Dec. 3, 2001, at 12:40 am., at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born July 9, 1920, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Jesse Edgar and Mabel (Miller) Shetrom. He married Florence Edith Wertz Oct. 15, 1942, at the First Regular Baptist Church Parsonage on Seventh Street, Huntingdon. She preceded him in death June 21, 1995. Surviving are a son, Jesse Edward "Mike" Shetrom of Huntingdon, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother, Samuel Richard Shetrom of Huntingdon, also survives. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Ray (Minerva) Rudy, Maggie Shetrom, Mrs. Geary D. (Madeline) Bunn, Mrs. Leroy (Dorothy) Whitesel, Betty Shetrom, Jesse E. Shetrom Jr. and John Shetrom. Mr. Shetrom attended the Calvary Independent Baptist Church in Huntingdon. Educated in the Huntingdon public schools, he graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1939. From 1945 until 1953, he served as a plumber with a number of general contractors. Until his retirement May 3, 1974, he worked as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution Huntingdon. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the American Theatre of Operations, attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade W with the 529th Base Headquarters Company. Mr. Shetrom was a member and past master of Mount Moriah Lodge No. 300, F&AM; a former member of the valley of Altoona AASR of Jaffa Temple AAONMS, and both chapter and commandery in the York Rite of Freemasonry. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was well-known for his handcrafted toy ducks which he cave away to children. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Coleman officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. RD. 1. Full military honors will be accorded at the graveside. Mary Ida (Barrick) SHILLING, 88, of 915 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died Saturday. Dec. 1, 2001, at midnight, at her home. Her death was unexpected. Born Feb. 25, 1913. in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late William and Sarah (Flake) Barrick. She married Howard Washington Shilling Jan. 28, 1933. He preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1991. Mrs. Shilling was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother: Isabelle B. Sinclair, Hester B. Fisher, Lillian B. Neff and William Barrick. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Huntingdon, where she was a member of the Episcopal Church women and served as the organization’s president. She attended the Huntingdon public schools and graduated from Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1931. For over 20 years, she was the co-owner and operator of the former Corset Shop on Washington Street in Hutntingdon. Mrs. Shilling was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority chapter in Huntingdon. In the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Shilling enjoyed fly fishing. Funeral services will be held Wednesday. Dec. 5, at 10 am., at the St. Johns Episcopal Church, 212 Penn St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Thomas Warne officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. M. Esther BARR, 87, of RD. 2, Box 175, Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Dec 4, 2001, at 5:50 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 21, 1914. in Jackson Township, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Rosalind Bickett) Barr. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Hazel Williams, Florence Smith and Eleanor White. Six nephews and one niece survive. Miss Barr was a member of the McAlevys Fort Presbyterian Church, McAlevys Fort, where she served as a former elder and deacon. A 1932 graduate of Stone Valley High School, she graduated from Lock Haven State Teachers College in 1946 and received a master’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State University in 1955. She retired from the Huntingdon area schools after 40 years of service. She taught at Cornpropst Mills Elementary School, Juniata Valley School District and William Smith Elementary School in Huntingdon. She was a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Huntingdon and state chapters, American Association of University Women and Women Christian Temperance Union. She was also a member of the McAlevys Fort Civic Association and Presbyterian Women. Miss Barr enjoyed traveling. reading and church activities. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the McAlevys Fort Presbyterian Church, with lay pastor Dan Morris officiating. Interment will be made in the Greenlea Cemetery, McAlevys Fort. John I. WEIR, 92, of Beverly Healthcare/Hillview, Altoona, formerly of 121 First Ave., Altoona, died Monday evening, Dec. 3, 2001, in the health care facility. Born Oct. 8, 1909, in Hollidaysburg, he was a son of the late Frank and Jennie (Black) Weir. He married Agnes Mae Morningstar March 12, 1932, in Warriors Mark. She preceded him in death Jan. 9, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Alice M. lsenherg of Altoona, three granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Weir was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona. He retired as a car repairman from Penn Central Railroad in 1975, after 30 years. He had also been employed as a supervisor for Pittsburgh Sign Co. in Altoona for seven years. He enjoyed fishing. hunting and gardening. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home, Altoona, with the Rev. Brian Armen officiating. Interment will he made in the Alto Reste Park, Altoona. Dallas Jay BANKS, 76. of Sierra Vista. Ariz., died Nov. 27, 2001, at his home. He had been in failing health for over a year. Born May 24, 1925. in Mapleton, he was a son of the late Jay W. and Margaret (Jamison) Banks. His wife, the former Betty Louise Stiles, preceded him in death in November 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Flexser of Ontario, Calif., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One son, Dallas Jay Banks Jr.. who was stationed in Vietnam, died from Agent Orange. Three siblings survive in the Huntingdon area: Clarence Banks, the Rev. Merrill Banks and Lillian Sheasley. Two nieces survive. Mr. Banks served during World War II and following the war, he worked at Owens Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon. In 1956, he moved to Bisbee, Ariz. and worked at Ft. Huachuca as a painter foreman until he moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Upon arriving in California in 1960, he was trained in woodworking and obtained further experience in exterior and interior painting, cabinet making and furniture refinishing. This experience enabled him to work for IJniver.sitv Studios and later Disney Studios. His ability to color was remarkable and progressed into his own creativity with oil paintings. Mr. Banks was a Christian man who ministered to those in need. He cared for his wife, Betty, and assisted with the care of his son. Dallas Jr. A memorial service was held Dec. 1, in Bisbee. Ariz. Interment will be made in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Covina, Calif. Robert J. CARPER, 53, of 23 Taylor Apartments, Mount Union, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 2 am., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born July 12, 1948, in Tyrone, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Letitia F (Thompson) Carper. He is survived by his companion, Ruth M. Reed of Mount Union, and a son, Robert W. Carper of Illinois. Four siblings survive: Lynne E. Lagle, Huntingdon; William G. Carper, Reedsville; David W. Carper, Mount Union; and Ronald J. Carper, Allensville. One brother, James R. Carper, preceded in death. Mr. Carper was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Sons of Italy in Mount Union and at one time worked at construction sites in Florida. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be made in the Goodman Cemetery, Huntingdon, R.D. 3. Daniel L. SMITH, 87, formerly of Mapleton RD. 1, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born April 16, 1914 at Princeton, WV, he was a son of the late Henry and Parthenia (Acres) Smith. He was married to Grace (Mozingo) Smith, who preceded in death Aug. 22, 2000. Mr. Smith is survived by a son from a previous marriage, Daniel L. Johnson, of San Diego, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Samuel (Alison) Nicol, of Fairless Hills. Seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. One sister, Esther Crooker, of Georgia; also survives. Mr. Smith was of the Protestant faith. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Madden-Wennick Post 518 American Legion, Rockhill Furnace. Mr Smith retired in 1978 from United States Steel Corp., Fairless Hills, after 30 years of service. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be made in Saltillo Cemetery. The Rev. Henry F. HOPKINS, 81, of Lewisburg, died at 3:27 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at River-Woods, where he had lived for over a year. He was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Nanty-Glo, a son of the late Thomas M. and Sara Ellen (Harrison) Hopkins. On June 6, 1945, in Sunbury, he married the former Betty T. Yordy. They were married 56 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons: James Hopkins, of Milton, and Steven Hopkins. of Hatfield. Five grandchildren also survive. He was a 1939 graduate of Catawisa High Schol and a 1944 graduate of Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, with a BA. degree. He was a 1947 graduate of Drew University School with a Master of Divinity degree. He was the last of six children. The Rev. Hopkins and two of his brothers dedicated their lives to serving the ministry in the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. His service took him to Snydertown charge, Sunbury area; Beaver Meadows, Hazelton area; Calvary, Berwick area; St. Peter’s, Riverside; Llyswen, Altoona; Epworth, Harrisburg; Wesley, Williamsport and Huntingdon First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He was superintendent of the State College district. His final appointment was Baughonan. New Cumberland. As a retired minister, he served Grace Church in South Williamsport and was visitation pastor at Pine Street United Methodist in Williamsport. Throughout his ministry, he served on many boards and committees of the conference. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons 490, Altoona and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg. Private interment will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Leroy J. "Lee" WALKER, 90, of 937 West Water Street, Bellefonte, died at 9:25 am. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Valley View, he was the son of Edward and Sarah (Mayhew) Walker. He was married June 9, 1934 to Florence Spicer in Bellefonte. She preceded him in death Jan. 16, 1999. Mr. Walker is survived by a son, Carl Walker, of Alexandria. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. A granddaughter, Amanda Walker, preceded in death. Mr. Walker attended Bellefonte public schools and attended the First Baptist Church of Bellefonte. He worked as a clerk at Cerro Metal Products. Bellefonte, for 38 years, from 1936 until his retirement in 1973. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Wetzler Funeral Home, Bellefonte. Officiating will be the Rev. James Fox. Interment will be made in Centre County Memorial Park in College Township. Carmen L. MARKEY, 90, of York, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at 4:28 p.m., at Rest Haven, York. Born June 25, 1911, in Cassville, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Nettie (Saylor) Wilson. She married Dr. Ernest L. Markey, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, E. Lowell Markey II of La Vale, Md., and two grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Gladys Wright of Cassville and Valetta Taylor of Allegheny County. Mrs. Markey was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Theos and the Surviving Spouses Social Club. She was a former member of the York County Chapter of ARC, York Women’s Club and York Symphony. During World War II, she volunteered for the American Red Cross. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in York. Mrs. Markey donated her body to the Humanity Gifts Registry. Lillian M. EBERSOLE, 96, of the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, formerly of Saxton, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the retirement center. Born April 28, 1905, in New Enterprise, she was a daughter of the late Daniel C. and Susan M. (Ritchey) Bechtel. She married Roscoe Ebersole, who preceded her in death Dec. 16, 1981. Surviving are two daughters: Betty R. Hamman of Saxton and Esther M. Kuhns of Martinsburg. There are seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. One great-grandson, Dana O’Neal, preceded her in death. Mrs. Ebersole was a member of the Saxton Brethren in Christ Church, Saxton. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury. with the Rev. Stevens Burr officiating. Interment will be made in the Grandview Cemetery, Saxton. Raymond K. LAIRD, 88, of 208 W. Water St., Mount Union, died at 6:10 am. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Born April 16, 1913, in Three Springs, he was a son of the late Lawrence D. and Viola (Kyler) Laird. He married Anna Pauline Brown Feb. 28, 1942, at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Union. She preceded him in death Dec. 17, 1998. Surviving are two nieces and a nephew, along with several grand-nieces and grandnephews. One brother, Clarence Laird Sr., is deceased. Mr. Laird was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Union, where he was also a member of the Herman Smith Sunday School Class. He attended the Mount Union High School and retired in 1977 from E. DeVecchis and Sons in Mount Union. Prior to that, he operated the R.K. Laird Coal and Lumber Co. since 1947 and was employed by Westinghouse of Pittsburgh for several years. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Bob Davidson officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. Russell "Pap’ TREECE, 70, of James Creek. RD., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital, after an unexpected illness. He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in the home of his parents, Arthur Dewey and Martha (Russell) Treece, who lived in Aitch. He married Mona Lou Dively Feb. 11, 1952, in Winchester. Va. Surviving, along with his wife, are seven children; Steven M. Treece, Zane R. Treece, Jeffrey L. Treece, Rhonda J. Treece, Craig R. Treece, Joel D. Treece and Mitchell J. Treece. There are 12 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother survive; Zelda Hetrick, Letty Barto, Jane Brosseau and Fred Treece. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Franklin and Ronald "Skeet" and two sisters, June Brindle and Ruby Johns. Mr. Treece started his truck driving career with E.F. Smith of Roaring Spring, then later worked for Eastern Express of Bedford. He retired from Mead Consumer and Office Products in Alexandria in 1996. He was a member of the United Paper Workers International Union, Broad Top Senior Citizens and Raystown Church of the Brethren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Dec. 12, at the Raystown Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Alfred Chamberlain officiating. James R. BOOKWALTER, 71, of Lock Haven, died at the James A. VanZandt Veterans Hospital in Altoona Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001. Born March 20, 1930, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late Chester F. and Betty M. Estep Bookwalter. He married Sally Tobin Nov. 28. 1958. Mrs. Bookwalter survives at home, along with the following children: Susan Lee Ciotti of Charlottesville, Va.; Becky Bookwalter, Lock Haven; Rick Bookwalter, Manassas, Va.; and Tim Bookwalter, Alexandria, Va. There are nine grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and a sister: Norman Bookwalter of Hampton, Va., and Dorothy Bookwalter of Huntingdon. Several nieces and nephews survive. One sister, Janet Hann, is deceased. Mr. Bookwalter was a technician during his career in the U.S. Air Force and received the Vietnam Service Medal. For several years, he served as a clinical lab technician at the Lock Haven Hospital. He attended the Lock Haven Assembly of God Church and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the Mt. Mansfield Masonic Lodge and the Valley of Williamsport Scottish Rite. He was a history buff, sports enthusiast and an avid golfer. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Lock Haven Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Wayne Hixon officiating. Interment will be made at the convenience of the family. William S. "Jiggs" KYLE, 77, of R.R. 1, Box 317, Porter Township, Alexandria, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at 3:45 am., at his Porter Township home, following a brief illness. Born Nov. 17, 1924, at the family home on Warrior Ridge, he was a son of the late George Franklin and Helen Hannah (Miller) Kyle. He married Betty L. Schirm Dec. 20, 1944, in Petersburg. Mrs. Kyle survives at home, along with a son, Randall L. Kyle of Porter Township, Alexandria. three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One brother, Earl L. Kyle of Mapleton, survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin R. "Buck" Kyle. Mr. Kyle was a member of the Christ Reformed Church UCC, Alexandria. He attended the Petersburg Vocational High School and for a number of years, he worked for the Alexandria Fire Clay Company. He later retired from Cresson Brick Company of Altoona in 1986. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Petersburg Sportsmen’s Club and served as Porter Township Supervisor for 14 years. Mr. Kyle served a brief tour with the Merchant Marines and was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening. A lifetime resident of Huntingdon County, he had lived at his Porter Township residence since October 1962. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 am. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Christ Reformed Church UCC, Alexandria, with the Rev. Gerald W. McCuller Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery. Raymond Eugene "Gene" SHOPE, 75, of Star Route, Box 3A, Huntingdon, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 9 pm., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a sudden illness. Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Smithfield, Huntingdon, he was the youngest child of the late Francis John and Laura Belle (Younker) Shope. He was twice married, first to Mary K. Stevens Sept. 14, 1947, at the Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. Mrs. Shope died Jan. 19, 1986. He then married Deborah M. (Smith) Whittaker Nov. 29, 1988, in Mount Union. She survives at home, along with a son and two daughters: Jebrey L. Shope Huntingdon, RD. 1; Jebra J. Guthridge, Hanover; and Debra K. Lansberry, Commerce, Ga. There are two granddaughters and two grandsons. Also surviving are one brother and five sisters: Miles Shope, Edith Richards, Virginia Morgan, and his twin sister, Irene Grissinger, all of Huntingdon; Ethel Goecke, Beavercreek, Ohio; and Dorothy Spriggle, Valparaiso, Ind. Mr. Shope was preceded in death by five brothers: Walter, Warren Plymire "Joe," Samuel, Ellsworth "Shorty," Nathaniel and Albert, and two sisters. Esther and Clara. A member of the Huntingdon High School Class of 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served aboard a destroyer escort, the C.P. Cecil, in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He served aboard the USS Currie, also a destroyer escort, during the Korean War. He was a fire controlman aboard both vessels. Prior to the World War II, he was employed as a welder at Alexandria Iron Works, Alexandria, Va. Following World War II, he graduated from the Sparling School of Deep Sea Diving, Wilmington, Calif., and used his welding skills under water in the San Diego, Calif., area. He then was a streetcar operator/tour guide and bus driver for D.C. Transit, Washington, D.C., before returning to Huntingdon in 1963. Mr. Shope drove for Shetrom Trucking from 1963 until 1965, hauling bricks throughout the United States. From 1968 until 1988, he was employed by Elco, formerly Gulf+Western Manufacturing Company. He retired in 1988 as a quality control supervisor. Mr. Shope had been active as a scoutmaster of Troop 204, Mill Creek, and had also been unit commissioner. He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing, photography, opera, sailing his own boat and flying his own plane. Mr. Shope had formerly held memberships in several service organizations. He was a member of Word of. Life Fellowship, Huntingdon, RD 2. For many years, he has been "the man who waves" for people traveling the road past his house. Since 1994, during the Christmas season, he had given up the porch swing in favor of the roof, where, dressed as Santa with his sleigh and reindeer, brought joy to many. He loved his family and all he met. Most of all, he was strong in his faith. Funeral services will be held at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. W. Thomas Warne III officiating. Interment will be private at the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. RD. 1. Ralph D. STAPLETON, 77, of 221 S. Washington St., Mount Union, died at 9:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a serious illness. Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Cass Township, Huntingdon County, near Calvin, he was a son of the late Charles and Edith (Chilcote) Stapleton. He married Nora C. McCavitt July 12, 1952. She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1980. He then married Anna Mae (Jacoby) Gerholt Dec. 27, 1986. Mrs. Stapleton survives at home, along with the following stepchildren: Lewis J. Gerholt, McConnellsburg; Georgianna M. Gerholt, Mount Union; Paula S. White, Waldorf, Md.; and Trish A. Reck of Allenport, Mount Union. There are eight step-grandchildren. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Earl Harris, Cleo (Harris) Guyton, Zada (Harris) Shafer, Katheryn (Harris) Shirley, Raymond Stapleton and Marshall Stapleton. Mr. Stapleton attended the Mount Union Wesleyan Church. Following high school, he attended trade school in Allentown to learn small motor repair. He retired as a foreman in 1974 with 20 years of service in the machine shop at Letterkenney Army Depot in Chambersburg. He was also self-employed as a small motor repairman for many years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe, including southern France and Normandy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Robert D. MUSANTE, 86, a resident of the University Park Nursing Center, State College, formerly of 1016 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at 5:25 am., at the nursing center. Born Feb. 18, 1915, in Tough Kenaman, Chester County, she was a daughter of the late Ellis Ellsworth Barton and Elsie (Richardson) Barton-Sill. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Charles Sill. She married John N. Musante Sr., who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, John N. Musante Jr. of Wernersville, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Musante was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, West Chester. She retired in 1978 from Penn Mutual Insurance Co. in West Chester, where she worked in the claims department as a manager. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in West Chester and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Huntingdon. STATES, 80, of 1123 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2001,at 5:20 am., at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born March 30, 1921, in Tyrone, she was a daughter of the late John R. and Clara (Elvey) Miller. She married Clyde M. States in 1949, in Winchester, Va. Mr. States survives at home, along with two daughters: Mrs. Terry (Sandra) Price of Huntingdon and Mrs. John (Barbara) Fitzsimmons, Pompano Beach. Fla. There are three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are two brothers, Leonard Miller of Tyrone and Robert Miller of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. Mrs. States was a member of the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Huntingdon. Irene Helen (Mumma) BROWN, 96, a resident of Shippensburg Health Care since August, formerly of Burnt Cabins, died Tuesday. Dec. 11, 2001, in Shippensburg. Born April 7, 1905, in Burnt Cabins, she was a daughter of the late John and Myrtle Mumma. She married Merrill L. Brown, who preceded her in death in 1984. Surviving are two sons: Donald Brown of Coalport and Warren Brown of Mechanicsburg. There are two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by 11 siblings. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Independent Bible Church of Burnt Cabins. Interment will be made in the Burnt Cabins Cemetery. James Heikes FOSTER, 83, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001. Born April 10, 1918, in Huntingdon, he was a son of James W. and Grace (Heikes) Foster His father was a former Huntingdon County Sheriff. He married Ruth Harbaugh, who preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons and one daughter: William G. Foster, Steven Foster and Kathleen Foster. There are two grandchildren. Mr Foster was a former president of Sayre National Bank and the Cement National Bank. He was also a former member of the Lehigh Valley Bankers Association. Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. Mary Jane LANE, 51, of 33 Briggs Rd., Silverford Heights, Mount Union, died Monday evening, Dec. 10, 2001, at her home. Born June 7, 1950, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Florence J. (Hetrick) Lower. She was united in marriage to Frank C. Lane Oct. 5, 1972, in Mount Union. Mr. Lane survives at home, along with a son, Aaron S. Lane of McVeytown, and one granddaughter. The following brothers and sisters survive: Catherine Jordan and Virginia M. Parsons, both of McVeytown; Donald L. Lower, Lewistown; Annie Gaff and Andrew F Lower, both of McVeytown. She was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Melvin L. Lower, George E. Main St., Allensville, died at 7:53 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 30, 1950, in Lewistown, he was a son of Samuel L. Sr. and Cartes (Smoker) Horning, who survive at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown. He married Crystal Ruble May 25, 1990. Mrs. Horning survives at home, along with a son, Samuel T. Horning, at home; a step-son, Wayne G. Tankersley, also at home; and three adopted children: Michael Horning, State College; Matthew Horning, McVeytown; and Jodi Horning, Dillsburg. There are three adopted grandchildren. Two sisters survive: Mrs. Terry (Mary Jo) Johnson, Fishers, Ind.; and Jane H. Zook, Reedsville. Mr. Horning was of the Methodist faith. He was employed by Early Life Marlette Homes and later as a construction worker for Lane Construction Corp., in Meriden, Conn. He was a member of Laborers Interntional Union Local 910. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Beulah P. ROSE, 82, a resident of Meadowview Manor, McVeytown since February 1999, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at 3:20 am., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born March 20, 1919, in Henderson Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel N. and Elsie C. (McElwain) Miller. She was reared in the Huntingdon area and moved to York in 1950. She married John L. Rose in 1954. Mr. Rose preceded her in death. Surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Huntingdon and Janet Johnson of San Clemente, Calif. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Miller, and a sister, Rachel Nagel. Mrs. Rose was a member of the Advent Lutheran Church in York. A 1935 graduate of Huntingdon High School, she retired from the Internal Revenue Service. Ora P BROWN, 67, of HC 01, Robertsdale, died at 11:28 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Feb. 21, 1934, in Todd Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Celia (Foor) Leonard. She married Carl H. Brown Jan. 16, 1954, at the Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Saltillo. Mr. Brown survives at home, along with the following children: Larry Brown and Janet Ramper, both of Robertsdale, RD.; Sandra Neville, Wells Tannery; Brenda Ramper, Broad Top; and Sharon Hicks, Calvin. There are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mildred Shope of Saltillo and Vera Leonard of Jonestown. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Brown was a charter member of the Heritage Baptist Church, Three Springs, RD., where she served for many years as a Sunday School teacher. For 17 years, she was employed by L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union. She was later a homemaker and co-owner of a day care center in Broad Top for several years. PHIPPS, 92, of Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, N.Y., formerly of Six Mile Run, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at 2:45 p.m., at Maplewood Manor, following an extended illness. Born Nov. 30. 1909, in Shirleysburg, he was a son of the late Richard and Alice (Houck) Phipps. He married Margaret P. Cowan Feb. 9, 1939, in Robertsdale. She preceded him in death Feb. 23. 1984. Surviving are three children: John R. Phipps and Curtis James Phipps, both of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Alice Duffney, Greenfield, N.Y. There are four grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Brighton, and two sons, Lanny Phipps and Sidney Phipps. Mr. Phipps was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a member of the Robertsdale Church of God. For 25 years he worked as a coal miner in the Broad Top area. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in the emergency room at Altoona Hospital. He died of injuries suffered in a Tuesday morning automobile accident along Route 26 in Hopewell Township, Bedford County. Born March 17, 1926, in Spangler, he was the son of the late George and Helen (Preplet) Husick. He was united in marriage to Maxine Baker Aug. 22, 1948, in Marklesburg. He is survived by his wife at home and by two children: George Husick of Altoona and Mrs. Russell (Monica) Reihart of Six Mile Run. Three sisters, Anna Lopata of Martinsburg, Susan Surdis of Brooklyn, N.Y.. and Helen Winters of Baltimore. Md., and two brothers, Joseph Husick of LaPalta, Md., and George Husick of Saxton, also survive, as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Mike Husick, and one sister, Mary Husick. Mr. Husick was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Bedford Moose Lodge, the Everett American Legion and the Hopewell VFW. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the United States Army. He attended Columbia University, held a private pilot license and a barber’s license and worked for a number of years as a baker. He also worked 20 years as a chauffeur for Farrell Lines in New York and was the owner/operator of Husick’s Garage and Excavating in Six Mile Run. He served as mayor of Coaldale for 20 years and, currently, as a member of the Tussey Mountain School Board, where he was chairman of the building and grounds committee. CREMER, 91, of 202 Westminster Drive, Huntingdon, died at 10:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at The Oaks, Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. Mr. Cremer had been ill for the past year. Born Sept. 23, 1910, in Saxton, he was the son of the late J. Edgar and Margaret (Entrekin) Cremer. He married Myrtle I. Parks Dec. 29, 1931, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death Dec. 17, 1993. He married Bernice M. Heffner, Dec. 30, 1995, at the 15th Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She survives at their home. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Betty C. Nye, Bridgewater, N.J. and Mrs. Glenn (Dorothy J.) Hoover, Huntingdon. Also surviving are one brother, George F Cremer, St. Johnsbury, Vt., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Cremer was a member of the Abbey Reformed Church United Church of Christ, Huntingdon. He was a 1927 graduate of Huntingdon High School and a 1931 graduate of Juniata College. Mr. Cremer had been a resident of Huntingdon since 1913 and worked for the Grange Trust Company, Huntingdon, which later merged with the First National Bank and then became Penn Central National Bank. He retired as a bank vice president. He enjoyed music, especially the "big band sound." He played the piano, violin and saxophone. A coach for an Abbey Reformed Church basketball team, he also announced for Huntingdon High School football and was a scorekeeper for high school basketball. He was associated with the Huntingdon City League as a manager and pitcher. During World War II he worked as a sports writer for the Daily News. Mr. Cremer was also well-known as a Huntingdon historian with scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. David Dearing officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. Orvil L. "Orie" HACK, 71, of 2006 Penn Street, Huntingdon, died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at James H. VanZandt VA Medical Center in Altoona. Born June 13, 1930, in Mapleton, he was the son of the late Fred and Mary Belle (Miller) Hack. He married Shirley Hamilton July 20, 1954, at Methodist Church of Limestone, N.Y. She survives at their Huntingdon residence. Mr. Hack is also survived by two sons, Gary L. Hack of Huntingdon and Curtis M. Hack of Petersburg. Also surviving are six grandchildren and numerous other relatives in the Huntingdon area. He was preceded in death by a son, Chris O’Brien Hack, a sister Betty Jane Hack and three brothers: Harold, Donald and Kenneth Hack. Mr. Hack was of the Methodist faith. He was a longtime member of Petersburg Sportsmen’s club and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his sons, grandchildren, family and friends at the hunting camp. He was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County and resided at his current home since 1960. Mr. Hack served with the United States Marine Corps from Jan. 16, 1952 through Jan. 15, 1954, during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed with Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division of Camp Lejune, N.C. He was awarded the Navy Occupational Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Hack retired in 1990 from Corbin’s Electric after working for 25 years as an electrician. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born July 21, 1979 at Greenfield, Mass., he was the son of Gary and Gail (Andrews) Rae who survive at the same address. Also surviving are one brother, Michael Rae. of Whitinsville, Mass., and two sisters, Autumn Rae, of Clifton, Va. and Colleen Rae, who resides at her parents’ home. Mr. Rae was involved with Americor doing conservation work with the Montana Conservation Corps., Helena, Mont., at Yellowstone National Park, the Continental Divide and the Frank Church River of No Return in Idaho. He was employed at his father’s business, Raystown Select Hardwoods, HCR 01, Broad Top, as a lumber inspector. Mr. Rae had attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 23, 1952. in Newton Hamilton, she was the daughter of the late Blair Robert Diven and Margaret (Rittenhos) Diven, who survives. Her loving husband, Edward J. Shaffer, whom she married Dec. 4, 2001, survives along with a son, Michael Diven, of Orbisonia. Also surviving are a sister Debbie, of McVeytown, and six brothers: Ken, of Mill Creek: James, of Newton Hamilton: Robert, of Orbisionia; Terry, Clair and Ronald, all of McVeytown. DRENNING, 49, of Blairsville, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 13, 1952, he was a son of the late Fred Drenning and Madeline Drenning, who survives in Saxton. Surviving along with his mother and wife of 26 years, the former Joyce M. Johnson of Blairsville, are the following children: Wesley Drenning, Pittsburgh; Lance Drenning, Luke Drenning, Caleb Drenning, Jen Drenning and foster children Dylan and Cody, all at home. Also surviving are several brothers and sisters: Dennis Drenning, Six Mile Run; Douglas Drenning, Saxton; Kenneth Drenning, Wisconsin; Alan Drenning, Woodbury; Audrey Chamberlain and Diane Decker, Six Mile Run; Kathy Imler, Saxton; and Becky Rodgers, Defiance. Several nieces, nephews and cousins survive.. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte and Norma Jean Drenning. Mr. Drenning was the pastor of the Light House Freedom Worship Center in Blairsville. He enjoyed hunting, carpentry, Penn State football and all sports. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the Latrobe Hospital, Latrobe. Born April 21, 1949, in Dry Run, he was the son of the late Chalmers and Mildred J. (Zeigler) Snyder He married Barbara Chilcote, from whom he was divorced. She survives in Newville. His companion, Bonnie Zeigler, survives at home. Also surviving are three daughters, Carol Snyder Gossert of Shippensburg, Misty Snyder of Carlisle and Jeannie Snyder of Newville; one son, David Snyder Jr. of Carlisle and five grandchildren. Two stepchildren, Carl Zeigler of Shade Gap and Dale Saunders of Carlisle, also survive. One sister, Kathy Hall of Newville, survives, as well as three stepsisters, Betty Palmer of Shade Gap, Annie Hooper of Shirleysburg and Carol Shore of McConnellsburg, and five stepnephews and three stepnieces. Mr. Snyder was a member of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Shade Gap. He was a member of the Shade Gap Lions and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. CONWAY, 41, of HCR 61, Box 332, Mill Creek, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile/pedestrian accident along Route 22 in Henderson Township. Born Jan. 14, 1960, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the Beverly J. Conway, who preceded him in death June 13, 2001. He married Penny D. Dysard July 9, 1999. She survives at home. He is survived by two sons; Adrian J. Conway of Phoenix, Ariz., and Danial K. Hooper of Mill Creek. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles R. Sr. and Sara E. Conway, in whose home he was reared. Mr. Conway was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Mount Union. He was a graduate of Mount Union Area High School, Class of 1978. where he played on the school’s football and basketball teams. He was an assistant basketball coach for MUAHS for eight years, an assistant coach for the Smithfield Rams Peewee football team, and last year was a volunteer coach for the Huntingdon junior varsity basketball team. He was currently employed by DDK Tool Co., Calvin, and as a security guard for Juniata College. Prior to that he had been employed by US Sports, Huntingdon, for 20 years. Virginia CRUM, 91, of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, formerly of Alexandria, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Woodland Retirement Center. Born Dec. 11, 1910, in McAlevys Fort, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Milton and Nannie Mae (Strunk) Wilson. She married Warren Clair Crum Sept. 13, 1932. He preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1992. She is survived by two sons, Norman P. Crum of Harrisonville and Sheldon D. Crum of Little Mountain, S.C.. and by two daughters, Marlene B. Moore of Huntingdon and Mrs. Richard (Yvonne) McMahon of Huntingdon, R.D. 3. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Warren Ray Crum, and by a grandson. She was the last surviving member of her immediately family, having been preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Miller and brothers, J. Edward Wilson, F. Taylor Wilson and Wallace Wilson. "Pete" HEASTER, 78, of Mapleton, died at 11:40 am. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Mapleton, he was the son of the late George Arthur and Ethel P. (Mills) Heaster. He was united in marriage to Barbara Rex Oct. 24, 1947, at the Mapleton Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife; two children, Trena S. Heaster of Mount Union and Kirk A. Heaster of Mapleton, and one grandson. Two brothers, Junior Heaster of Mapleton and Don Heaster of Mount Union, also survive. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Kenard "Wee Wee" Heaster, Orville Heaster, Gerald Heaster and Harold Heaster. Mr. Heaster was of the Protestant faith. He attended Mount Union schools and served with the U.S. Army 774th Tank Division during World War II under the command of Gen. George Patton in the European Theatre. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 322, Mapleton; a member of the VFW Post 1754, Huntingdon, and a lifetime member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was employed by US Silica, formerly the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Co., of Mapleton from Oct. 22, 1953, to Feb. 1, 1988, when he retired. Born Feb. 22, 1951, in Bellefonte, he was the son of Donald A. and Shirley L. (Brown) Ludick, who survive in Bellefonte. He married Glenda Grove in 1970 in Huntingdon. John Elwood CORBIN, 77, of 360 Westminster Drive, Huntingdon, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. at the Oaks at Westminster Woods, Born Sept. 28, 1924, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late John A. and Blanche (Garner) Corbin. He is survived by two sons; John Steven Corbin and Martin Lee Corbin, both of Elizabethtown. A sister. Phyllis J. Tyree of Georgia also survives. Mr. Corbin was of the Lutheran faith. He served with the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and was a life member of the American Legion Post 0146. He was educated in Huntingdon public schools, graduating from Huntingdon High School in 1943 and, later, from the Pittsburgh Institute of Technology. He was a civilian employee with the U.S. government at the Tobyhanna Army Depot and an avid hunter and fisherman. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of Mr. Corbin’s family. CUTSHALL, 81, of Aurora, Col., a retired Air Force veteran and a former Arapahoe County deputy sheriff, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, in Denver, Col. He was born March 28, 1920, in Akron, Ohio. In 1942, he married Erma Marie Lucht. She preceded him in death in 1998. He is survived by two sons, Jerry Cutshall, Pierce. Col., and Jack Cutshall of Windsor, Col., and three grandchildren. His son, James Cutshall, preceded him in death. A brother, Robert Cutshall, Huntingdon, also survives. Mr. Cutshall attended Juniata College until his National Guard unit was activated in 1941. He transferred to the Army Air Corps in August 1941. During World War II, he served with the 12th Bombardment Group in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy and India. He remained in the Air Force until his retirement in 1963, attaining the rank of senior master sergeant. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a nuclear safety specialist at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, Calif. He returned to Colorado in 1979 and entered law enforcement as a deputy sheriff in the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department. He retired from the department in 1985. Interment of the cremains was made at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Irene F. BESECKE, 82, of HCR 71, Orbisonia, died at 6 am. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at the Old Orchard Health Care Center in Easton. Born March 2, 1919, in Braunschweig, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Wilheim and Helena Wagele. She married Gerhard F. Besecke Oct. 23, 1941. He preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1999. She is survived by two sons, Rainer Besecke of Jamison and Juergen Besecke of Bethlehem, and five grandchildren. A sister, Gertrude Rupmond, who lives in Germany, also survives. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his home. Born Feb. 6,1929, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Jerry M. and Gladys J. (Ross) Teeters. He married Patricia Ann White Oct. 5, 1950, in Lewistown. He is survived by his wife at home; by three sons: Larry P. Teeters of Tyler, Texas; Thomas L. Teeters and David K. Teeters, both of Huntingdon, and by five grandchildren. Born May 1, 1914, in Dudley. she was the daughter of James C. and Alice (Johnson) Figard. She married William 0. Lynn Dec. 9, 1935, in Cumberland, Md. He preceded her in death March 23, 1994. Surviving are a son and two daughters: James B. Lynn and Linda L. Barton, both of Saxton, and JoAnna Bratt of Middleburg Heights, Ohio. There are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Fern Louise MAST, 74, of Coatesville died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, while directing the Christmas cantata during Sunday worship at the Romansville United Methodist Church. She was born in Mapleton, the daughter of the late Virl and Reba (Wharton) Park. She and her husband, Ellsworth S. Mast, had been married for 28 years. She is survived by her husband and by three children: Ronald J. Clifford of Wentzville, Mo.; Wendy Sue Walton of Santa Clarita, Calif. and Deborah Ray Sheehan of Portland, Conn. She is also survived by four stepchildren: Carol Moore of Honey Brook; Joanna O’Neill of Rutland, Vt.; Isaac C. Mast of Colorado Springs, Col., and Ingrid Ford of Carrollton, Texas. Fourteen grandchiidren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. A brother, Max Park of Mapleton, survives. She was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Hastings, the daughter of the late Louis and Margaret Gill. She married James N. Miller, who preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1976. She is survived by a son, Carl E. "Smitty" SMITH, 77, formerly of the Mount Union area and for the past four years at the home of his son, Ricky Smith of 2030 Big Greenbriar Road, McVeytown, died at 3:40 am. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lebanon. He had been in failing health. Born March 1, 1924, in Hustontown, he was the son of Clarence and Edna Elizabeth (Mentzer) Smith. He is survived by two children; Ricky F. Smith of McVeytown and Cathy Smith of Shippensburg. and by two grandchildren. A brother, Serwell Smith of Shippensburg. and a sister. Blanche Smith of Manheim, also survive. Born March 25. 1959, in Huntingdon, he was the son of Anthony and Adeline (Zinobile) Cialone of Shirleysburg. He is survived by his parents and by a sister, Angelina Kershaw, and her family. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Fred Anthony Cialone, February 1957. Mr. Cialone was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a 1978 graduate of Mount Union Area High School and was a former member of the Allenport Lions Club. He was manager of Cialone’s Beverage Distributors Inc., his family’s Shirley Township business, having been employed there for the past 21 years. He was also employed by the Industrial Hardwood Corporation in Mount Union for over 10 years during his tenure at the family business. Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg. Born April 26, 1932, in Shade Gap, she was the daughter of the late John Neely and Ethel Jane (Krugh) Berrier. She married Robert Virgil Rosenberry, who preceded her in death June 29, 1982. She is survived by three sons: Robert C., James F. and David L. Rosenberry, all of Dry Run, and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by three brothers: Harold N. Berrier of Enola, Joseph C. Berrier of East Waterford and Gerald L. Berrier of McAlisterville, and three sisters: Delores M. Brechbill of Spring Run, Anna B. Johnson of Orrstown and Winifred I. Berrier of McAlisterville. Her death was unexpected. Born May 21, 1951, in Camden, N.J., she was the daughter of Stella (Smith) Formanek, who survives in Cape May, N.J., and the late Calvin Waters. She married Robert G. Werner Jr. Aug. 28, 1998, in Winchester, Va. She is survived by her husband, at home, and by two sons, Clifford F. Boardman III of Kistler and Sean M. Waters of Mill Creek. She was retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, where she worked for 30 years. She had also owned and operated Charlotte’s Beauty Shop in her home in Chambersburg for over 50 years. She was a member of Women of the Moose No. 1128, the Falling Spring Chapter of AARP No. 2840 and the Burt J. Asper Post 47 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, all of Chambersburg. Interment will be made in Concord Union Cemetery, Concord. Mary F. KEIL, 80, of West Township, Box 65, Petersburg, died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Born June 15, 1921, in Spring City, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Anne (Mannion) Levengood. She married Henry A. Keil Nov. 14, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spring City. She is survived by her husband, at home, and by two children, Carol Anne Heflin of Pottstown and James H. Keil of Trout Run. Two grandsons also survive. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having had one brother and one sister precede her in death. Mrs. Keil was of the Catholic faith. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary to Thomas W. O’Conner Post 602 in Spring City. She was a 1939 graduate of Spring City High School and worked as a secretary at her husband’s business, Henry Keil Welding & Fabricating. VARNER, 69 of Rockhill Furnace, died at 1:04 a.m. Thursday, Dec.27, 2001, at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born Nov. 4, 1932. in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Issac and Gaynel (Blake) Varner. He married Dorothy F. Burkett Nov. 18, 1960 in Cherry Point. N.C. His wife preceded him in death June 15, 1998. He is survived by four children; James L. Varner, Joseph H. Varner, Jacqueline A. Carlin and Jeffrey M. Varner, all of Rockhill Furnace, as well as by five grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Isaac Varner of Waterfall, and three sisters: Nellie Gerringer and Geraldine Stallman, both of Three Springs, R.D., and Ann Brown of Mifflintown. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Mr.Varner was of the Brethren faith. He was last employed by Morgan Bros. Sawmill, Blacklog Valley. SECREST, 77, of 642 Kistler Road, Mount Union, died unexpectedly at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. He was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Mapleton. the son of the late William G. and Marie J. (Snyder) Sechrist. He was united in marriage to Opal Beatty March 5, 1948, at the Methodist Church in Hagerstown, Md.. by the Rev. Lefew. He is survived by his wife and a son, Darrell D. Secrest of Shirleysburg. Eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive. He is survived by two brothers, Ray C. Snyder of Akron. Ohio, and Robert G. Sechrist of Mount Union. RD. 1, and three sisters, Martha J. Wertz. Edna F. Reed and Betty L. Reed, all of McVeytown, RD. 1. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma C. Sechrist and Edith R. Freed, and a brother, Thomas R. Sechrist. Mr Secrest was an active member in the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church, where he acted as lay speaker, was a member of the church choir and participated in a special ministry delivering tapes to shut-ins. He was also a member of United Methodist Men. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was a member of the McVeytown Lodge No. 376, F&AM, and a lifetime member of the Mount Union VFW Post 5754. He attended Atkinsons Mills schools and was retired from Sperry Rand-New Holland in Belleville where he worked for many years. Prior to his employment at Sperry Rand-New Holland, he worked for Harbison-Walker Refractories, Mount Union. He very much enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. BROWN, 88, of Pine Street, Saltillo, died Thursday morning, Dec. 27, 2001, at his home. Born May 1, 1913, in Saltillo, he was the son of the late Willis and Martha (Brodbeck) Brown. He is survived by a sister, LaRue Coder of Mapleton, and a brother, Robert Brown of Shippensburg. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Mr. Brown was of the Baptist faith. He was a member and past president of the Saltillo Lions Club and a member of the Madden-Wennick American Legion Post 518, Orbisonia. In earlier years, he worked at North American Refractories, Mount Union and for Eastern Hardwoods, Shirleysburg. Silvia Joyce PORT, 93, of 711 Beech St., Golden Colo., formerly of 241 King St. Petersburg, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Lutheran Hospital, Wheat Ridge, Colo. She had been in declining health for the past year and a half. Born Jan. 22, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Howard W. and Harriet M. (Kyle) Port. She married Robert H. Port in 1930 in Petersburg. He preceded her in death Aug. 17, 1988. She is survived by one son, S. Donald Port of Golden, Colo., three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Elwood V. Port of Petersburg, also survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Clyde Port, and by one sister, Pearl Port. Mrs. Port was a member of the Crever Memorial United Methodist Church, Petersburg, where she served in many church offices and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was a graduate of Petersburg Vocational High School and was primarily and homemaker who enjoyed gardening and cooking. She had lived at her Golden, Colo. home since February 2000. Dorothy Ann BOWMAN, 64, of Three Springs, RD. 2, formerly of Huntingdon, died Friday. Dec. 28, 2001. She was born Dec. 8, 1937, at Clover Creek, the daughter of the late Jacob William and Virgie (Rhine) Traxler. She married Milton Bowman Aug. 31, 1964, in Huntingdon. He preceded her in death June 13, 1986. She is survived by three children: Shirley M. "Cheryl" Smith of Saltillo, Jesse A. Bowman of Three Springs and Kevin M. Bowman of Elizabethtown, and by seven grandchildren as well. A brother, Denver W. Traxler of Hollidaysburg. also survives. Four sisters, Ellen J. Rhine, Rachel L. Traxler, Della C. Moore and Betty I. Aponte, and two brothers, Robert E. Traxler and Jacob C. Traxler, preceded her in death. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the Three Springs Assembly of God Church She was primarily a homemaker. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. Robert C. KYLE, 75, Hershey, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. Born Sept. 24, 1926, in Huntingdon, he was the son of James and Ethel (Pollock) Kyle. Surviving are his wife, Irene D. Kyle, at their home; one son, David R. Kyle, Wellsboro; three daughters, Kathy M. Messner, Ono; Jean L. Kondraski, Leesport; and Judy A. Eusi, Harrisburg. Also surviving are three sisters: Greta Rainey, Huntingdon; Doris Schroy, Harrisburg; and Betty Saltzman. Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Kyle was a member of the Grace and Truth Bible Church, Hummelstown. He was a graduate of the former Alexandria High School. Mr. Kyle retired from the Milton Hershey School where he was a houseparent. He was a former telephone engineer with a number of different independent telephone companies. He was also a Pennsylvania Game Commission officer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member and vice president of the Alexandria River Hill Gun Club and a member of the National Rifle Association. Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 11 am. at the Grace and Truth Bible Church, Hummelstown. Interment will be made in Hershey Cemetery. Capt. Charles E. STEEL, 71, of Longs, S.C., died Dec. 29, 2001. He was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Huntingdon, the son of the late Charles P. and Frances (Bales) Steel. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Catherine M. Steel. His first wife, Dorothy (Waite) Steel preceded him in death. A son, Charles E. Steel Jr. of Harpers Ferry, W. Va., and two daughters, Cynthia Roache of Reston, Va., and Cheryl Francis of Abington, Va., survive, as well as three stepdaughters, Pamela Elcesser of Reston, Va., Lisa Kirby of Sterling, Va. and Cathy Rawls of Maysville, W. Va. and one stepson, Leo Gordijenko of Leesburg, Va. Eight grandchildren also survive. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Johnson of Eugene, Ore., and Janet Hefright of Huntingdon, and one brother, George Steel of Huntingdon. Mr. Steel was a 35-year veteran of the U.S. Navy where he achieved a great number of high honors including 10 Legion of Merit Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals with combat "V", Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. During his time of service in the Vietnam War he was a Crusader fighter pilot credited with numerous night carrier landings. Later he served as executive officer of NAFI in Indianapolis and was then assigned to Naval Air Systems Command, Washington, D.C., as program project director for various F-14 electronic warfare and communications systems. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he worked for contractors in the Washington, D.C. area and later moved to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was an active member of the VFW Post No. 10804. He graduated from the W.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1954, and attended Stanford University. Interment will be made in Arlington National Cemetery. Helen M. HORNADAY, 81, of The Oaks, Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, died at 3:30 am. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Aug. 28, 1920, in Chester, she was the daughter of Kiril and Alexandra (Kostik) Melnikoff. She was married to Dr Wayne A. Hornaday Jr., who preceded her in death in 1969. Surviving are two sons, John W. Hornaday, Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., and Neal A. Hornaday, Galion, Ohio. Also surviving are two daughters, Anne H. Siems, Huntingdon, R.R. 4, and Mary Louise Taylor, Norfolk, Va.; two brothers. Albert Froy, Berwyn and Walter Melnikoff, Canandensis; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Hornaday, a resident of Huntingdon for the past 15 years, attend the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She was a 1939 graduate of Clifton Heights High School and a 1942 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for a brief time, but was primarily a homemaker. HURLEY, 65, of 18725 Meadowind Lane, Altoona, Fla., died Sunday , Dec. 30, 2001. He was born in Neffs Mils, Petersburg, R.R. 1, and moved to his last residence in 1988, from Orlando, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Penny L., at home, and two sons, Gregory Thomas Hurley of Lewisburg and Bradley Stephen Hurley of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by six grandchildren. A brother, Gary Hurley of Alexandria, and a sister, Helen Broadbent, of Petersburg, survive. Mr. Hurley was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Umatilla, Fla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the international Union of Operating Engineers and the National Rifle Association. Michael Benjamin FARROW, 44, of 3063 Emmet Avenue, Huntingdon, died at noon Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at his residence. He was born May 18, 1957, in Philadelphia, the son of John Robert and Joan Ann (Hoffman) Farrow, who survive in Feasterville. He married Joy Marie Nale Dec. 26, 1991, in Winchester, Va. He is survived by his wife and one son, Michael John Farrow, at home. He is survived by one brother, James Thomas Farrow of Doylestown, and one sister, Frances Mary Farrow of Feasterville. He was preceded in death by an infant brother. Mr. Farrow was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the Blind Association, and attended public schools in Feasterville, as well as a training school for the blind in Johnstown. He was a trained auto Mechanic, tool and die maker and could perform small engine repair. He had lived in Huntingdon for the past seven years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home Inc., 417 Washington St. Huntingdon, with the Rev. David R. Becker officiating. William L. WHITSEL, 53, of Shirleysburg, R.R. 1, died Monday evening, Dec. 31, 2001, at his home. He had been ill for the past eight months. Born July 3, 1948, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Raymond and Catherine (Miller) Whitsel. He married Susan Hawn July 6, 1974, in Huntingdon. He is survived by his wife, at home. A son, Mark Whitsel, and daughter, Robin Whitsel, also survive, at home. He is survived by five brothers; Robert Whitsel of Allenport; Gerald, Charles and Howard Whitsel, all of Shirleysburg and Don Whitsel of Inglis, Fla. A sister, Helen Lightner of Mt. Union also survives. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Whitsel. Mr. Whitsel had been employed by Asplundh Tree Experts for the last 20 years and prior to that, had been employed by Harbison-Walker Refactories, Mt. Union, for 10 years. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be made in the IOOF Memorial Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace.
