Ernest, 59, of HCR61, Box 471, Mill Creek, died at 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following an extended illness. The funeral service was held April 2 at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Rev. Jeff Winstead and Rev. Ken Patterson officiating. Interment was in the Mapleton IOOF Cemetery. He was born on Dec. 18, 1942, in Mapleton Depot, the son of Norman C. Ernest, who preceded him in death, and Flora (DeMario) Ernest, who resides in Mapleton. He was united in marriage to Linda (King) Johnson Ernest on June 21, 1986, in Huntingdon. She survives along with the following children: Charles E. Ernest of Mapleton, Joseph Norman Ernest of Kistler, Carrie Elizabeth Ernest of University Park, State College, Kevin G. Johnson of Calvin, Brett A. Johnson of Bushkill, Darin W. Johnson of Calvin and Lesley J. Ramsey of Calvin. A sister and brother survive: Donna L. Beeler of Huntingdon and Richard N. Ernest of RD3 Mount Union. Nine grandchildren also survive. An infant brother, Ronald Lee Ernest, preceded him in death. Mr. Ernest graduated from Captain Jack High School, class of 1960. He served in the U. S. Army, at the Pentagon, during the Vietnam War. He retired, in November of 2000, from SCI-Huntingdon, where he was employed as a corrections officer, with 15 years of service. Mr. Ernest was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also pitched for many years for the Mapleton baseball team in the county league. He played the keyboard and accordion, and did vocals for various local bands for 43 years. He was a member of the Mapleton Legion Color Guard when it was active. Mr. Ernest was of the Methodist faith.
