She was born June 3, 1927 in Altoona, a daughter of Harold Shaffer and Pauline (Buechele) Shaffer. Her grandparents were G.W. and Dana Shaffer, founders of the Shaffer Stores in Altoona. On September 24, 1951 in Winchester, VA she was married by the Reverend Schribner to James Alan Filson who survives. She is also survived by one son and two daughters: Barry Jay "BJ" Filson and his wife Ellen of Hesston, Pauline "Sis" (Filson) Hetrick and her husband Chris of Hesston and Pamela (Filson) Prosser of Hesston; three grandchildren, Melissa Mae Filson, Benjamin James Filson and S. Maxwell Prosser, all of Hesston. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister: Robert Shaffer, Betty (Shaffer) McGregor and Donald Shaffer. She was raised in the Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Jacobs Church of Hesston. She was a former member of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, a former member of the Raystown Ski Club at the "Old Dam", organized the boat races and ski shows at the "Old Dam", served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and as a Scout Leader, was a former Girl Scout Leader, served on the Huntingdon Area School District Board of Directors and was a former member of the Huntingdon Soroptomist Club. She also served on the Board of Directors of the North/South Shortway and its successor organization, the Huntingdon County Tourist Promotion Agency and served as Committee Chair for the development of the "Raystown Country Sampler" cookbooks. She attended Adam Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High and Altoona High School and graduated from Juniata College with the Class of 1947. Mrs. Filson was a Home Economics teacher in Snowshoe, Hublersburg, State College and the Huntingdon County Vo-Tech. She was co-founder of Jim's Anchorage in 1947 and helped establish 7 Points Marina and was employed for 20 years by Anchorage Enterprise, Inc. She also developed Sunshine Acres Vacation Rentals and was founder of Raystown Wireless, Inc. In 1935 she christened the first Cruise Boat "Scoutabout" on Raystown Dam that was purchased by G.W. Shaffer at the Chicago World's Fair. She was an accomplished violinist with the Altoona Symphony and an avid gardener and landscaper. Mrs. Filson was a gourmet cook. She adored her grandchildren, enjoyed reading, houseboating, traveling and birdwatching. The greatest joy in her life was her family. The most trying experience was having to leave her home and heritage at the Old Raystown Dam. The family has requested that there be no public viewing or visitation. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested for the J.C.
