(Peter) Gardner, 81, of 16734 Wrangletown Rd. Shirleysburg, died at 2:25 p.m., Monday, January 19, 2009, at this home. The funeral service was held on Friday, January 23, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. Officiating will be Rev. Jim Hullihen and interment will be in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery. He was born on October 21, 1927, a son of the late Ira and Hilda (Wiser) Gardner Rorer. His stepfather, David L. Rorer, preceded him in death. He was married to Anna Mary (Corbin) Gardner on November 10, 1948, in Niagara Falls, NY. She preceded him in death on April 6, 2001. Mr. Gardner is survived by the following children: Joel E. Gardner and wife, Sandra of Mount Union; Susan A. Gardner and companion, Jim Craig of Newton Hamilton; David Kim Gardner of Shirleysburg; Lisa K. Flasher and husband, Art of Manassas, VA and Glen J. Thompson and wife, Jeanette of Huntingdon. There are 10 grandchildren surviving: Natalie Giacobello; Jeff Giacobello; David Gardner; Matthew Gardner; Dylan Gardner; Joshua Zinn; Zachary Gardner; Wesley Flasher; Jordan Flasher and Stephanie Thompson. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Gardner was also preceded in death by a sister, Hope Gourley. He was a member of the Sugar Run Church of the Brethren. He was actively involved in the historical committee for Mt. Nebo Church and also served as caretaker for the church for many years. Mr. Gardner had operated the Shirleysburg Garage for 21 years and was a school bus contractor for 35 years for the Mount Union Area School District. He graduated from Mount Union High School in the Class of 1946 and was honorably discharged from the US Army after having served in the Army of Occupation in Japan at the end of WWII. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Cromwell Masonic Lodge; a member of the Mount Union Area Historical Society; the last surviving charter member of the Ft. Shirley Lions Club and a life member of both the American Legion Post 107 and the VFW Post 5754, both of Mount Union.
