Garner, 89, of 4358 McAlevys Fort Road, Petersburg, died at 2:35 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, at his home. Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Penn Township, he was a son of the late Harry Ernest and Sara Jane (Kyler) Garner. He was united in marriage to the former Willagene Couch, April 5, 1939, in the Belleville Presbyterian Parsonage. Mrs. Garner survives at home. Mr. Garner is survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Jane Garner, Camp Hill; two grandsons, Kevin E. Garner and fiancee, Karen Sherman, Etters; and Jeffrey L. Garner and wife, Claudia, Shippensburg; and four great- grandchildren, Kevin E. Garner Jr., Serina Garner, Hannah Garner, and Spencer Garner. He is also survived by 10 siblings: Herbert Garner, Trough Creek; Thelma Metz, Pine Grove Mills; Carrie "Hass" Justice, Ann Isenberg and Sgt. 1st Class Ernest I. "Sonny" Garner, all of Huntingdon; Dot DeArmitt and Alice Russler, both of Mooresville; Ethel Lightner, State College; Sylvia Hammond, Huntingdon, RR 2; and Betty Fry, Petersburg. He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Fay Garner; and a brother and sister, Harold "Lefty" Garner and Eva Garner. Mr. Garner attended Saint Stephen's Lutheran Church, McAlevy's Fort. He was a life member of the Stone Creek Volunteer Fire Co. Mr. Garner was the last survivor of the five original founders of the Glen O. Hawbaker Co., State College, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator and dynamite specialist for 18 years. He was also employed by the Forestry Department at Whipple Dam State Park. Mr. Garner was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 27, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Evelyn Wald officiating. Interment will be made in the Saint Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, McAlevys Fort. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the hour of Monday's services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Saint Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, c/o Wesley A. Boonie, 4246 McAlevys Fort Road, Petersburg, PA 16669.
